THE QUOTA COLLECT

Quench in our hearts, O Lord, all fires of selfishness.

Unfold to us the joys of true friendship.

Open our minds to a better understanding of service.

Teach us the real meaning of sharing.

And help us to hold high those principles of Quota for we stand.

TAMARAC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (DEAF CHILDREN)

ANNUAL SIGNING SANTA PARTY CHAIR: ELLIE CONWAY -- BUDGET $600, SPENT $416

Committee: Joanne Jaycox, Dolores Taylor, Carol Zeber, and Jamie Conway

The annual Signing Santa Party was held on Friday, December 11th (Set-up 12:00 p.m., Party 1:00 p.m.)

Jeff West, a former student was Signing Santa. Mrs. Santa (Joanne Jaycox) was on hand to add her charm to the party. Ellie Conway, as usual, did an outstanding job in choosing gifts for the 25 children. Gifts this year were stuffed animals and books “galore” for the children. The delight on the faces of the children when they unwrapped their books was beyond belief. They were so happy to have them. Except for the candy canes, Ellie shopped and provided all the refreshments and other items for the party.

Ellie’s teenage grandchildren are to be thanked for wrapping the gifts. Jamie was home and a huge help in loading, unloading and assisting at the party.

“KARDS FOR KIDS” CHAIR: DOLORES TAYLOR – BUDGET $50 SPENT $ -0-

Committee: Anamarie Baker, Barbara Duncan, Marie Katz, Judy Smith, Carol Zeber

The children also received their Christmas cards from Quota at this party. Teacher Nancy Rose Peduzzi says they “love the beautiful cards.”

H.O.M.E.S. CO-CHAIRS: CAROL ZEBER & MARIE KATZ – BUDGET $600, SPENT $596.75

The Christmas party given for the young people at H.O.M.E.S. was a huge success. H.O.M.E.S. is an organization that works to help young men and women after they age out of foster care. On the day of their 18th birthday, young people living in foster homes are given all their worldly goods in a trash bag and turned out alone in the world. H.O.M.E.S. provides lovely low-rent apartments for them and assists them with job, life, and education choices.

When Quota asked how we could help, CEO, President and Founder of H.O.M.E.S., Katharine Barry asked if we would give a Christmas Party. “Of course,” we said. Preparation for the party began in early December. We began by purchasing $20 Publix gift certificates for each of the youngsters. Then, we shopped for table cloths, napkins, plates, cups, flatware, serving trays, candy canes, and gift tags. Some of us dug into our own decorations and donated lights and decorations. Several of the girls have tiny children (six in all), so we gave each of them a Quota Cares Bear. We also loaned tables and chairs for the event. One of the most rewarding parts of the process was preparing the food. Eight of us baked cookies and/or blueberry and banana breads, wrapped each piece and placed them in buckets to give each young person their own home-baked Christmas goodies to take home. The buckets were also used as the table decorations. On December 18th, all this was delivered to H.O.M.E.S., along with appetizers (cashews, spinach bread dip, and cheese platter); salads; a green-bean casserole; mashed potatoes; sliced turkey; stuffing; honey baked hams; and desserts (cake, pies, and cherry delight).

Not only did Quota do all the above, but we inspired others to take part. Members of the Board of Directors of H.O.M.E.S. donated time, effort and money. They provided pick-up up of the tables and chairs. They set up the party. They also donated funds for bikes and other gift items for the kids. Dolores Taylor, Sue Gaughan, Joanne Jaycox and Gayle Bramson represented the Club at the party.

Everyone had a wonderful time. For some of these young people, this was their first Christmas party and Santa was even there to make it perfect for them.

Many thanks go to Marie Katz for bringing this organization to our attention and introducing us to Kathy Barry.

MARKHAM ELEMENTARY (MIGRANT CHILDREN) CHAIR: CAROL ZEBER

BUDGET $700 SPENT à $56.42 (Spring 2009 Snacks), $333.91 (Teaching Tools), $138.25 (Christmas)

Quota the Bear visited the migrant children of Markham Elementary School on December 9th and told them the story of “The Night Before Christmas.” The children loved the story and love Quota the Bear.

Coloring books and crayons which were purchased for the children for Christmas will be delivered in January, since Quota the Bear was very sick and could not take a chance on infecting the children just before the holiday. Santa would not have appreciated that.

What was delivered to them was a wonderful television with built in DVD player, which was donated to Quota by Kathy and Brian Campbell. It’s a small TV, just the right size for the children to gather around. Teacher Laura Van Epps is ever so grateful. She says in the past they have had to search out a TV to borrow whenever they needed one. Now they have the use of one at any time. It’s a wonderful teaching tool for these children who are still learning the English language.

PROVIDENCE PLACE CHAIR: JOANNE JAYCOX

MONTHLY SHOE BOXES -- BUDGET $100 (if needed) SPENT $ -0-

Cindy and Kim decided to help the men of Providence Place by filling baskets instead of shoe boxes with items they would enjoy. They made eight of them. They were just beautiful. See the article and picture in the January Chatterbox. Thank you letters are received each month from Providence Place. These items are truly appreciated.

OUTREACH IN THE NAME OF QUOTA JOANNE & BILL JAYCOX BUDGET $ -0-

Joanne and Bill continue to network and distribute items given to them where they can best be used, all in the name of Quota. They were recognized by the Broward Outreach Center of Pompano for, in addition to other things, making arrangements for the great entertainment at their Thanksgiving Banquet. Walgreens also donated lots of extra candy for our military to be distributed by America’s Moms for Soldiers.

Respectfully submitted, Carol Zeber, Chair
