HEALTHFUL LIVING/ PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSES

Course Description

Students will acquire application skills for handling real life situations. Students will receive the foundation for making solid decisions that lead to a healthy lifestyle. Students will also study skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and access to a physically-active lifestyle.

Health Education The Health Education section of the course is divided into six sections:

  1. Nutrition & Physical Activity
  2. Mental & Emotional Health
  3. Personal & Consumer Health
  4. Interpersonal Communications & Relationships
  5. Alcohol, Tobacco, & Other Drugs
  6. Sex Education

Each section of Health will have the following assessments:

Wise Guys/ Smart Girls

These programs are designed to be a weekly, gender specific education for high school students. Each week students will attend a seminar that covers a specific aspect of sex education. Participation in the program requires a written consent form which will be passed out the first week of school. Students will be graded on participation/ behavior during these sessions.Students are excused from dressing out during these sessions.

Physical Education The Physical Education section of the course is divided into four areas of concentration:

  1. Motor Skills (catching, balance, rhythm, sports skills)
  2. Movement Concepts (stretching, cardio-vascular fitness, strength, plyometrics)
  3. Health-Related Fitness (nutrition, workout safety, workout building, performance assessment)
  4. Personal & Social Responsibility (team-work, leadership, respect, safety, communication)

Health Education Schedule

The Health Education Section of the course will rotate every third week of class. Each of Health will cover one of the six sections. A typical week:

Monday: Smart Girls

Tuesday - Thursday: Regular class

Friday: Wise Guys

Course Rubric

Health and PE will be graded on a standard scale:

  1. 100-90
  2. 89-80
  3. 79-70
  4. 69-60
  5. BELOW 60

Make-Up Work

All students may make up work missed due to absence or school activities. After three days, late work will be accepted up until the end of a nine-week period for a 20 point penalty.

Homework

Most assignments will be due on the Thursday of a Health week. Any assignment is designed to be completed in class. Students who have homework did not complete work during class.
