  1. Welcome – John Salinas welcomed the group as his last official duty as the senior co-chair of Faculty Senate. Cyndy Patterson will assume the role as the senior co-chair for 2011-12. Midge Shaw was elected the new co-chair representing Josephine County. Cyndy and Midge will get together summer term to work on the meeting schedule for the year.

2.Minutes of Last Meeting – The minutes from the April 22 meeting were reviewed and approved as written. They will be posted to the Y Drive under the “Faculty Senate docs” folder and shared with the Board of Education.

3.Overview of Faculty Senate -

Year in Review

  • Cleaned up language in bylaws
  • Formalized process for electing Part-time At Large Representatives
  • Revised the number of meetings per year to once a month, if possible

October Meeting

  • Presentation on learning vs. grading
  • On-course materials exploration
  • Review policies of accepting late work
  • Actions recommended: get formal recognition of FS in faculty contract

November Meeting

  • Handling controversial topics in class
  • Budget issues presented
  • Field trip procedures discussion
  • Volunteers for SENSE survey interviewed by Cheryl Markwell
  • Discussed grading and evaluation

January Meeting

  • Academic freedom discussion initiated
  • Progress of Institutional Learning Outcomes
  • Action Item: draft board policy to recognize Faculty Senate

February Meeting

  • Textbook availability for students
  • Report on CCSSE survey
  • Presidents’ Climate Commitment
  • Ongoing discussion of how to implement academic freedom in classes

April Meeting

  • High school outreach
  • Handling disruptive students
  • Field trip procedures – review by Tracey Olsen-Oliver
  • Report on green components in curriculum
  • Continued discussion on academic freedom
  • Report on board recognition of Faculty Senate
  • Feedback on granting emeritus status

4.Ideas for Next Year -

  • Review the process for writing a grant (perhaps invite Mary O’Kief to meeting)
  • Disruptive behavior of students (examples of this behavior will be added to Just in Case Guidelines and posted to Faculty Resources website)
  • Student retention
  • Implement CCSSE survey results
  • Plus and minus grading
  • Cross curriculum instruction
  • Effectiveness of online evaluations
  • Forum to present an educational resource
  • Standardize a late work policy by department

5.Representatives for Faculty Senate - Each department is allowed one or two representatives on Faculty Senate to be chosen or elected the beginning of fall term (per bylaws). This could be done the week faculty return in September during a department meeting. Provide names to Diana Moynahan who will update the group email list for Faculty Senate.
