Larry and Carolyn Keith Awards

in Sports Writing and Sports Photography

These awards honor Larry Keith, editorial projects director of Sports Illustrated, and Carolyn Keith, a former picture editor for the magazine. Larry Keith is a 1969 graduate of the School of Journalism and has been a reporter, writer and editor at Sports Illustrated. He was named assistant managing editor in 1985 and editorial projects director in 1987. Keith developed the editorial prospectus for Sports Illustrated for Kids. In 1991, he received the Time Inc. Magazine Company President’s Award. Carolyn Keith earned her master’s degree in English literature from the University of Chicago in 1972 and was a picture editor at Sports Illustrated until 1977.

Undergraduate majors and professional master’s students in the school are eligible to apply. Applicants must fill out the application and attach a résumé and five samples (articles or photographs or URLs) of their work that have been published in the last 12 months. Applicants should demonstrate proficiency in event, personality and feature coverage, with at least one sample of each. The most important criterion for the awards is sports writing or sports photography ability. That is more important than academic standing or financial need.

Please return your application to Robin Jackson in 315 Carroll Hall.

The application deadline is Feb. 1.
