Understanding Mental Illness and Mental Health Issues
What’s it about?
/ This one day workshop is suitable for anyone who wishes to better their understanding of mental illness including counsellors, teachers, carers, youth/community workers, volunteers, etc. Participants will learn about what defines mental illness, how diagnosis is made and will explore the presenting features and treatment approaches for a range of mental illnesses.
- Anxiety Disorders – Panic Attacks, Social Phobia, OCD, PTSD
- Depression – Major Depression, Bipolar, Post Natal Depression
- Psychosis and Schizophrenia
- Behaviour Disorders -ADHD, Conduct Disorder, Autism, Asperger’s
- Substance Use/Abuse
- Treatment Approaches –Counselling and CBT, Medication, self help groups and internet resources
- How to help and support people experiencing a mental illness

- This workshop is presented by Phil Nunn, a Psychologist who has worked with marginalised and ‘at risk’ young people for over 20 years. Phil provides specialised training for counsellors and youthworkers in communication and counselling skills, mental health issues, suicide risk assessment, substance use/abuse, Autism and ADHD including the use of music and other forms of creative expression as therapeutic tools.
