imgsrc= Founded in 1892, the Hamilton Watch Company of Lancaster, PA would not officially start producing watches until 1894. Its first chosen name was the “Columbian Watch Co.” but this had already been copyrighted by the Waterbury Company. The name Hamilton was then chosen - a tribute to Lancaster’s founding father, Mr. Andrew Hamilton, a Scottish-born attorney who was instrumental in the town’s growth.
By 1908 Hamilton was producing a lady’s pendant (convertible) watch and, following the USA’s entry into WWI, a small line of military style wire lug trench watches were available for men. Hamilton never looked back, arguably producing the highest quality American made watches from the 1920s through the 1960s.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following CRANSTON model from the Hamilton firm, a nicely sculpted, mid-century modern timepiece that was first introduced in 1952 (also the year this example dates to). This 10kt Yellow Gold filled wristwatch is in excellent condition and features a handsome black enamel dial with 18k solid gold numerals and hour markers.
Triple-signed, it measures 37mm end to end and 22.5mm in width (24mm with winding crown). This works out to be just shy of 1-1/2 inches in length by 7/8 of an inch wide, not counting the crown. It is powered by its original and higher-grade 19 jewel, manual wind mechanism that has been fully serviced by my watchmaker David to ensure it it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
Theblack enamel finished dial has been professionally restored and is in pristine condition. It features a 60 minute outer track border, applied 18kt Solid Gold numbers and diamond-shaped hour indicators, original Lance-style gold metal hands and a recessed sub-seconds dial with 60 second outer chapter and “sweep” gold seconds hand. Signed HAMILTON below the 12.
What I really like about this model (and the Hamilton Boulton) is the round sub dial – most rectangular or square watches would have a matching shaped seconds dial but making it “round” like we see here truly adds a nice contrast.
The solid glass crystal is in flawless condition, new old stock and made specifically for the Cranston model (removed in some photos to minimize glare). The 10 Karat Yellow Gold filled case is a beauty, finely sculpted and featuring “swooping” lugs. It is in excellent condition with no wear or brassing, perhaps a few small scratches. The matching gold finish winding crown is not marked but I strongly believe it to be original. It is in excellent order and winds and sets smoothly.
Turning the watch over I note that the back lid is in excellent condition with no wear or engravings – perhaps a few light scratches. It is stamped “HAMILTON” at one edge and “10kt Gold Filled” on the opposite side. Inside I find a beautiful Nineteen Jewel movement (with fancy Geneva Striping) that is signed Hamilton – USA – 19 Jewels – [Grade] 753 with serial number 27226F. This serial number (as it related to the grade 753) dates the watch to 1952. The inside case lid is signed Cranston - Hamilton W. Co., Lancaster PA - 10K Gold Filled with reference number and case maker name (Star Watch Case Co.) below.
This fine watch has been completely disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new and high quality 17 black crocodile (grain) calf leather strap with matching gold buckle, ready to wear and enjoy. All in all an excellent, ready to wear mid 20th century timepiece from America’s best wristwatch company – as good (and often better) quality than the well-known Swiss firms (such as Longines or Omega) of its day.<p<ulli>Since 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. imgsrc= Founded by Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer in New York City, the Wittnauer Watch Company.became an official business in 1880, when the brand was “officially” introduced. Albert, along with his brother Louis (and later Emile) imported complete watches or just mechanisms from its Geneva, Switzerland factory. In 1889 the company ran its very first advertisement. Appearing in the twentieth anniversary issue of the Jewelers’ Weekly, the ad notes that the company sold both “plain and complicated” watches, suggesting that it was a source for chronographs and repeating watches.
By the 20th century they were firmly established as providing watches, chronometers and military timing devices to the military, famed early explorers and the general public, and are on record for producing the first waterproof watch called the “All Proof” in 1918. Long associated with the Longines Watch Co. via a US partnership the firm is now owned by Bulova, once a great competitor.
I am pleased to offer for sale the following vintage Wittnauer timepiece, an excellent and ORIGINAL men’s 10kt White Gold filledAll Proof 1200 (“Diamond Aristocrat” Model 1076) that dates toca 1960. This hermetic case watch is in original and immaculate shape, only the deBeerEuropa band is new. Please note the genuine diamond settings on the dial, complemented by the faceted silver steel outer ring. When you add a fancy “notched” bezel to the picture you get one unique and amazing timepiece.
When first introduced, both the Longines and Wittnauer All Proof 1200 watches were marketed as being extra thin and hermetically-sealed, making them better protected than most watches against common watch hazards.
Quadruple-signed, this watch measures 39mm lug tip to lug tip and 33.5mm in width (35.5mm with original Wittnauer-signed steel winding crown). This works out to be just over 1-1/2 inches long by 1-5/16 inches wide, not including the original crown. It is powered by its original 17 jewel, manual wind WittnauerRevue 76/3G caliber mechanism, the “Revue” series being Wittnauer’s finest. It has been fully servicedby my skilled watchmaker David prior to auction to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time.
The 100% original silver enamel dial is in pristine condition – untouched since it left the factory and without any flaws. It features a silver steel faceted outer track with projecting hour markers, genuine diamond markers in rhodium settings and original silver steel Baton-style hands. As this is a “dress” watch where elegance is the priority it lacks a sub-seconds or sweep seconds hand. Signed WITTNAUER below the 12 and further signed SWISS at the base of the dial.
The original hardened acrylic crystal is in excellent, clear condition. The one-piece case (with removable bezel ring) is 10 Karat White Gold Filled and in excellent condition, truly immaculate folks and it has never been polished. The matching color winding crown (with male/female two-piece stem for movement removal) is stamped with the Wittnauer trademark and in excellent shape, winding and setting smoothly.
Turning the watch over, I see that the back of the case is in excellent PLUS condition with absolutely no wear or engravings. It is stamped USE ALL PROOF WRENCH and also 1200. Being a one-piece case you access the mechanism by removing the crystal and then the dial/mechanism. The clean, three finger bridge mechanism is signed Wittnauer Watch Co. Inc., Swiss [Caliber] 76/3G Revue– Seventeen 17 Jewels, AXA. The inside of the case is stamped <i[Model] 1076 – Longines Wittnauer Watch Co., Inc., New York, Geneva, Montreal – S&W – 10K Gold Filled - 919445. The initials “S&W” stand for Schwab & Wuischpard, prominent American case makers (still in business today as Wuishpard).
This watch has been fully serviced (disassembled, cleaned, oiled and regulated) to ensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping accurate time. It comes fitted on a new 18mm black deBeer Paris ostrich grain hand crafted calf leather Swiss strap with matching chrome steel buckle. All in all a close to NEW OLD STOCK condition watch where only the band is new – I think you’re going to really like this “Diamond Aristocrat” model! <p<ulliSince 1998, Holben's Fine Watches' goal has been happy customers. imgsrc= My longtime favorite U.S. watch company is the Elgin National Watch Company, a prolific American firm established in 1864 on 35 acres of land donated by the City of Elgin, Illinois. It was a strategic location, right next to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, one of the busiest railways into Chicago, and the Elgin factory would become the focal point of the town.
By 1867 the first watch was marketed for sale, retailing for $115 (an amazing sum in today’s dollars) and Elgin was soon competing head-on with its chief competitor, Waltham, who (ironically) were instrumental in forming Elgin, as two of the original organizers were P.S. Bartlett and D.G. Currier, previously of Waltham firm. Bartlett and Currier would later join the Illinois Watch Co. of Springfield.
If you have been looking for a ladies Art Deco Tank style watch that is a bit “different” from the rest I think you might be interested in the following model. It is a ladies doctors dial (or nurses) model from 1937, introduced at the same time as the men’s Dr. William Osler model and very similar in design (albeit smaller). William Osler was a famed Canadian physician and one of the "Big Four" founding professors at Johns Hopkins Hospital as the first Professor of Medicine and founder of the Medical Service there.
This fully signed timepiece is in excellent condition, its 10kt Yellow Gold filled wire lug case measuring 30mm lug tip to lug tip and 17mm in width (18.5mm with original crown). This works out to be 1-3/16 inches long by 5/8 of an inch wide and it is attached to a new old stock black cord vintage bracelet that will fit a wrist up to 7 inches in size (I can easily adjust this as well, just let me know the length you need). It is powered by its original and higher-grade 15 jewel, manual wind mechanism that has been fully serviced by my trusted watchmaker David, ensuring it is running well and keeping accurate time.
The enamel finished dial is in flawless condition – absolutely pristine.
