Job description

Overall Aims:

To develop and deliver a culturally competent sexual health promotion and STI/HIV prevention service for the black African and Caribbean (BAC) communities (including dual heritage) within Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham.

Health promotion activities will include rapid HIV Testing, condom and resource distribution, contraception advice and support, community-based outreach, primary care referrals and running training presentations. You will also be recruiting, training and supervising community health champions to support this outreach and awareness-raising work.

Background:

NAZ, Race Equality Foundation, GMFA and Antidote at London Friend have come together to form the RISE Partnership providing HIV Prevention and Sexual Health services to Black African & Caribbean communities; and to gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) across Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham boroughs (LSL) from April 2016.

Through this programme of work we will transform the sexual health experiences of Black African & Caribbean and MSM communities by building confidence, promoting self-esteem and developing individual capacity to negotiate better sexual health. Our evidence-based interventions are designed to enable those with the greatest risk of poor sexual health outcomes to have fulfilling sexual lives, understand how to access the right local service and ultimately to support better physical, mental and sexual health outcomes.

Main responsibilities of post:

Outreach and health promotion

  1. To be responsible for developing and coordinating the delivery of health promotion information/resources including condom distribution for BAC communities across Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham (LSL)
  1. To deliver behavioural change (motivational interviewing) interventions to members of the public
  1. To deliver Rapid HIV Testing at the NAZ office and at outreach settings within the community; and attend monthly group supervision around testing. We will provide Rapid HIV Tester training
  1. Improve access to primary care, GUM and other health services for BAME by developing referral pathways with specialist staff at local sexual health centres and hospitals
  1. Recruit, train and supervise volunteer community champions to support the project; assign roles and tasks. A significant part of your time will be supervising them to carry out outreach and awareness-raising activities with their peers or within the boroughs
  1. To liaise closely and work in partnership with other agencies in the community, voluntary, statutory and commercial sectors to help raise awareness of HIV and sexual health in BAME communities
  1. To run a social media presence to promote sexual health and our work with communities

  1. To assist in delivering training presentations and workshops to a variety of stakeholders
  1. To represent NAZ at public events relative to the needs and concerns of BAC communities in LSL

  1. To prepare work plans and quarterly monitoring reports on project progress on reaching agreed targets and outcomes
  1. To manage and complete all record keeping/attendance figures; ensuring the maintenance of accurate records for purposes of evaluating and monitoring the project
  1. Keep up to date on issues related to HIV and sexual health promotion prevention for BAME
  2. Document all client work in line with NAZ good practice, particularly with regard to confidentiality and data protection issues.
  3. To carry out the duties of the post with due regard to NAZ policies such as Equal Opportunities, child protection/safeguarding and health and safety
  4. The ability to work flexible hoursoutside of normal office hours with reasonable notice
  5. To carry out other duties as may be reasonably required
