It’s the Journey Grants $770,000 to Atlanta-Area Breast Cancer Organizations

ATLANTA (March 1, 2010) —It’s the Journey, Atlanta’s premier breast cancer non-profit organization and producer of the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, granted $770,000 to 20 Atlanta-area breast cancer organizations at its 7th Annual Grant Party on March 1. The money, raised through the 2009 Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, by walkers, sponsors, and donors, brings total funds distributed by It’s the Journey to $6.6 million since 2003.

“It’s the Journey exists to support the organizations that serve Atlanta’s breast cancer community,” said Robin Cohen, Executive Director of It’s the Journey, Inc. “The walkers, volunteers, sponsors and the entire Atlanta community have given a significant amount of their time and energy to assist our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends living with breast cancer. Tonight’s event is about celebrating those individuals and their tireless efforts in support Atlanta’s breast cancer community.”

It’s the Journey presented checks to area hospitals, organizations and health centers that focus on breast cancer education, research, early detection, awareness and support services. Grantees include the American Cancer Society, Breast Friends, Inc., Cancer Navigators, Center for Black Women’s Wellness, Center for Pan Asian Community Service, DeKalb Medical Foundation, Floyd Healthcare Foundation, Georgia Cancer Foundation, Northside Hospital: Hereditary Cancer Program, Piedmont Hospital, Saint Joseph’s Mercy Care Services, Turning Point Women’s Healthcare, and the Young Survivors Coalition: Greater Metro Atlanta Area.

“Cancer ravages more than a person’s health. It often has a devastating effect on finances, crippling a family’s ability to meet financial obligations,” said Sandy Ray with theAmerican Cancer Society. “Thanks to a grant from It’s the Journey, Inc., the American Cancer Society is able to help breast cancer patients in the Atlanta area who are facing eviction, are behind in their mortgage payments or are unable to pay their utility bills due to the overwhelming costs associated with fighting and treating cancer.”

During the 2009 Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, participants walked 30 miles through downtown Atlanta, raising more than $1.1 million. The participants walked alongside breast cancer survivors in support of friends, relatives and loved ones suffering from this debilitating disease. The 2010 Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer will be held on October 2 and 3. For information on registering, or donating to a walker, visit
