3. / Public Participation:
New Club Proposal / A new club proposal was submitted by Caleb Chapman. The club will be called The Pokemon Club. The club is based on a game that includes collecting and trading cards. The sponsor will be Mrs. Turner. Consensus was reached to adopt the club.
4. / Department Reports: Special Ed, Math, English and Arts/Humanities / Mr. Hundley presented on behalf of the Special Ed Department and provided a handout. In summary, he advised that the students are always in front of a content teacher. In addition they are working with emerging achievers and math strategies classes. They are seeing a strong growth in math. English is improving especially since the Read 180 program started. However, the program started late September, so they are hoping they will see even more growth the second semester. Ms. Sandman asked how many Special Ed teachers we have and how many students. Mr. Hundley advised that there are 7 teachers and there are approximately 100 students. Ms. Sandman also asked if we were going to track progress from now until Senior year to see if they have improved. Both Mr. Akers and Mr. Hundley said, “yes”.
Ms. Joyner presented on behalf of the English Department and passed out a handout. She showed STAR test scores for the 9th, 10th and 11th grade. 9th grade scores are down, but they are hoping to see some improvement with the Read 180 program. The English Department is also focusing on vocabulary, ACT test taking strategies, Writing On Demand and really trying to foster a love for reading with their students.
Mr. Mastin presented on behalf of the Math Department and a handout was provided. Mr. Mastin said that they are definitely seeing a growth in Math. He indicated that all grades showed positive gains on all levels and that there was a reduction of bottom performing groups and an increase in students above 40 PR.
Arts/Humanities Department was unable to present.
5. / Mid Year Data Review / R. Akers / Mr. Akers advised that Mid-Year Data would be reviewed at a later date.
6. / Culturally Responsive Training Reflection / R. Akers / Ms. Morford advised the council that the cultural responsive training was really good and that she liked the approach that Mr. Lewis used to present. He had them think about how they identified themselves and then asked them to think about how they identify others. All agreed that Mr. Lewis with very encouraging and gave really good examples. Ms. Dawson asked if there was any type of training that could be done with the students. Mr. Akers said that luckily our school has really not seen any problems among the students but that it was something he could look into.
