Homework: Altitude Research Questions

Directions: Choose ONE of the following questions to explore the importance of our atmosphere. Answer the question by thoroughly explaining each component.

CITE where you got your information. Be sure to use credible sources (NOT Wikipedia!)

WRITE a short (2-3 paragraph) essay on your chosen question.

1.  How does moving to and competing in different altitudes affect athletes and their training? Ex. Super Bowl 50 Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers, cyclists and runners.

2.  If you were to climb an extremely tall mountain such as Mt. Kilimanjaro or Mt. Everest, what would you need to do to prepare and what would you need to pact to prepare for the change of altitude?

3.  Several people in history have attempted to free fall/skydive through the atmosphere. What type of training did they have to go through to be able to be successful? What challenges did they face? What type of equipment was necessary?

4.  What is the Ozone Layer? Why is it important? Throughout history what has happened to it? What strides are being done to protect this protective layer?

5.  Describe the experience an astronaut faces during flight travel to outer space beyond the exosphere. Be sure to include takeoff and reentry to Earth! Do not forget the effect of friction!
