Miss Maple Lake Program Rules

Maple Lake Chamber of Commerce, Inc. is proud to sponsor the St. Patrick’s Festival. As part of the event, the Chamber encourages young women to participate in a competition to determine which young lady will be selected as Queen and Princesses to represent the City of Maple Lake.

To ensure that all contestants have a fair opportunity to compete for the title, the Chamber has adopted these rules which shall govern the competition.

1. The program shall be managed by a Queen’s Committee, which shall be appointed by the Chamber to oversee and administer all of the details of the Program.

The Maple Lake Queen’s Committee reserves the right, without prior notice, to:

  • Make current, prospective or retroactive changes to the Miss Maple Lake Rules contract or objectives.
  • Deviate from the rules in those cases where deviation is deemed to be in the best interests of the Royal Court or pageant.
  • The Committee shall make the final decisions on interpretations of rules.

Any person aggrieved by the decision may appeal to the Chamber at its next regularly scheduled meeting. The decision of the majority of the Chamber members present and voting at said meeting shall constitute the final decision on all issues, from which there shall be no appeal.

2. To avoid any possible appearance of impropriety in the competition, no member of the immediate family of any candidate shall be allowed to serve on the Queen’s Committee during the year of candidacy or during the year of reign. Relatives of prospective candidates, or former candidates, are welcomed and encouraged to participate in making the event a success for everyone.

3. To be eligible, candidates must be a female whom has reached the age of 17 years on or before January 1st of the year of their candidacy. Candidates cannot be over the age of 20 on or before January 1st of the year of their candidacy.

4. If the candidate is enrolled in high school, she must be enrolled in and attending the School District #881 on January 1st of the year of her candidacy. If she is not enrolled in high school, or is attending a different high school, she must live:

A. Within the district boundaries of School District #881 or;

B. Within the MapleLake “trade area” defined as all territory, which lies within seven miles of the city limits of the City of Maple Lake.

5. Each candidate must provide four reproducible candidate photos at her own expense, to be used for publicity photographs. The Committee encourages candidates to use wallet-size senior pictures; however, these are not required and any reproducible photographs will suffice.

6. There shall be three winners of the competition, as follows: One candidate shall be elected “Queen” and two candidates shall be elected “Princess”. The “Princesses” shall be of equal rank and there shall be no first or second runner-up. The Queen and Princesses shall be determined by the vote of a panel of independent judges who shall be selected by the Queen’s Committee. The decision of the independent judges shall be final. Each candidate shall complete a written questionnaire and write an essay on a topic to be selected by the Queen’s Committee. Each candidate shall be interviewed by the judges at a personal interview and shall be judged on their questionnaire, written essay, and interview including: carriage, demeanor, bearing, speaking ability, and overall self-presentation.

7. Her fellow candidates shall elect one of the candidates “Miss Congeniality”. Each “Miss Congeniality” will also receive other recognition by the Queen’s Committee. Miss Congeniality may also be selected as Queen or Princess, but is not required to be. Miss Congeniality will be recognized and noted at festival time.

8. In addition to the preceding rules, which apply to all candidates, the following rule shall apply to the candidates who are selected as Queen and Princesses.

9. The Maple Lake Chamber of Commerce, Inc. expects the Queen and Princesses to represent the City of Maple Lake, its residents, and businesses, at many social and public events such as parades, luncheons, coronations, the Aquatennial, and other general appearances. As an ambassador and representative of the citizens of Maple Lake, the Queen and Princesses (also known as the “Royal Family”) are expected to be on their best behavior at all times in public.

10. No member of the Royal Family shall use tobacco, drugs, alcohol, or foul language at any time in public. During their reign as members of the Royal Family, neither the Queen nor the Princesses may be married or cohabitating with a person of the opposite sex. No candidate selected as Queen or Princess may be a parent or pregnant during her reign. The members of the Royal Family shall not be permitted to terminate a pregnancy in order to retain their crown; by virtue of becoming pregnant, the members of the Royal Family agree to immediately surrender their crown and resign from the Royal Family. Any of these activities will reserve the right of the Queen’s Committee to review the grounds of dismissal.

11. All members of the Royal Family shall be on time for all scheduled events, and shall be neat, clean, wearing appropriate garments for the appearance.

12. All members of the Royal Family are required to attend the Queen’s Banquet, St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon, Parade, and Coronation. Each person selected to be a member of the Royal Family shall be obligated to attend no less than two-thirds of all scheduled calendar events.

13. As royalty representing MapleLake, the Royal Family is expected to attend functions together, which includes the Chaperone(s). All members of the Royal Family are expected to ride together to and from scheduled events, and to present an appearance of harmony, good will, and camaraderie.

14. An approved chaperon when making an appearance at a scheduled event shall accompany the members of the Royal Family.

15. The Queen, who has been selected to represent the City of Maple Lake in the Minneapolis Aquatennial, shall receive an allowance for a gown for the Queen of the Lakes competition. The Chamber shall pay the Aquatennial representative’s entry fee and shall provide her with publicity photos.

16. All candidates, and all members of the Royal Family, are expected to abide by all of these rules at all times. Failure to do so may result in the disqualification of a candidate before coronation, or may result in a member of the Royal Family being divested of her title and a replacement being elevated to take her position. If a member of the Royal Family or a queen candidate shall violate any laws, such as minor consumption, open bottle or any illegal affair, they shall be up on grounds for review of dismissal.

17. In event a candidate decides to drop out of competition after expenses have been incurred those expenses then become the responsibility of the candidate.

18. Two representatives from the Queen’s Committee will be present while purchasing attire for the reigning family. Apparel must be bought, ordered or arrangements made to be bought within one month following coronation.

19. The Queen’s Committee reserves the right to cap the number of participating candidates at 17 total, if they see the need to go over that number it is up to their discretion. In the event of 6 or less participants in the candidacy of “MissMapleLake”, we as the committee reserve the right to have a Queen and 1 princess selected from the group of participants.

20. The Queen’s Committee will schedule and approve appearances by the Royal Family.

21. By signing below the candidate and her parent(s) acknowledge that she has read and understood these rules, has received a copy of them, understand the ramifications, and is willing to abide by them.
