THE SERVICE OF THE WORD (p. 38 in the red hymnal)

- WE GATHER TO WORSHIP -

HYMN: CW #538: “The Church’s One Foundation”

M:The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C:And also with you.

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C:Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

- WE PRAISE THE LORD -

M: In the peace of God’s forgiveness, let us praise the Lord:

C: ♫ (the music is on p. 39 of the hymnal) Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him. Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues forever. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

(ALLO Lord, our God, be gracious to your people who pray to you. Do not deal with us according to your justice, but mercifully grant us your pardon and peace. We pray in Jesus’ name, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. ♫ Amen. (please be seated)

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: Jeremiah 31:31-34
31“The days are coming,” declares theLord,
“when I will make a new covenant
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
32It will not be like the covenant
I made with their ancestors
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they broke my covenant,
though I was a husbandtothem,”
declares theLord.
33“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
after that time,” declares theLord.
“I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
34No longer will they teachtheir neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know theLord,’
because they will all knowme,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares theLord.
“For I will forgivetheir wickedness
and will remember their sinsno more.”

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 1, p. 64

SECOND LESSON: Romans 3:19-28

19Now we know that whatever the law says,it says to those who are under the law,so that every mouth may be silencedand the whole world held accountable to God.20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law;rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

21But now apart from the law the righteousness of Godhas been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.22This righteousness is given through faithinJesus Christto all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,23for all have sinnedand fall short of the glory of God,24and all are justifiedfreely by his gracethrough the redemptionthat came by Christ Jesus.25God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—26he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith.28For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

VERSE OF THE DAY: CW #280 vs. 6: “Thy Strong Word”

God the Father, light-creator, To thee laud and honor be. To thee, Light from Light begotten, Praise be sung eternally. Holy Spirit, light-revealer, Glory, glory be to thee. Mortals, angels, now and ever Praise the Holy Trinity!

GOSPEL: John 8:31-36
31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said,“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”33They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendantsand have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

34Jesus replied,“Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.35Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”Footnotes:

THE MESSAGE FROM GOD’S WORD

TEXT: John 8:31-36

THEME: EMANCIPATION

  1. From Sin
  2. By Jesus
  3. Through the Word

THE APOSTLES’ CREED:

I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian church, the communion of saints;

the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Pastor/Vacation this week:

As we went “to press”, there was a good chance that your pastor will be gone most of this week. The longtime friend, Randy Bell, who helped pastor back in ’09 when he arrowed his huge bull, drew his first elk tag in 20 years of NV applications. Anyway, his son and son-in-law hunted with him the past week in the Jarbidge area, to no avail as of Wednesday night, and they both are coming back for work today. So, your pastor will be probably be entering his “Apache elk guide” mode tomorrow, returning Friday.
