To Returning Faculty Familiar with Moodle:
A Moodle Refresher - What to Do Before Class Begins
Why Use Moodle with a Face-to-Face Class
1. Be prepared for snow days.
2. Interact easily with more students, including reluctant students.
3. Encourage interaction and cooperation between students outside class.
4. Encourage active learning activities.
Make Your Course Visible to Students
By default, courses are not visible to students so that you can work on them. When the course name is light gray, it is hidden. When it is visible it will be blue.
When you make your course visible, also change course dates.
- Click on the gear in the upper right corner
- Click “Edit Settings”
- Go to the 4th line, “Visible,” and change “Hide” to “Show”
- Save at the bottom
- Change the visibility of the course back to gray at the end of the semester
Set Course Dates
The newest version of Moodle does not have the feature to sort your courses on your dashboard by dragging and dropping. At this point, the only way to sort is to add an end date to all of your courses for all semesters. Once you set an end date, your courses will be sorted into the three categories on your dashboard.
In Progress - courses with a start date of today's date, or previous date, appear here.
Future - courses with a start date greater than today's date
Past - courses where an end date is set to be today's date, or previous
To set course dates:
- Click on the gear in the upper right corner
- Click “Edit Settings”
- In the General section, Change the Course Start Date for spring, 2018 to January 8, 2018
- Next to “Course End Date,” click “Enable”
- Set the end date to a date after grades are due
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save and Display”
Add Topics
Multiple topics are no longer listed by default. Do not add course content under Announcements. Add a new Topic so that students will see all content.
- Click on the gear in the upper right corner
- Click “Turn Editing On”
- In the content area, under Add an Activity or Resource, click “Add topics.” In the pop-up box, add as many topics as you like and click “Add topics”
- Your can change the first topic to Syllabus, or another introductory heading, and proceed

TIPS
- VISIBILITY. Decide when you want students to access the course. By default, courses are not visible, but you may choose to give students advance access, particularly for an upper level class for majors. Once the course is visible, all materials are visible. You may want to hide some materials so as to not overwhelm the students, or to keep them focused.
- GRADEBOOK. Set up your gradebook. In Moodle you add categories to your gradebook, such as Assignments, Quizzes, so that you can assign categories to assignments as you create them. This ensures that grades go to the gradebook in the correct places. Take a workshop or contact ATS to learn more.
- ATTENDANCE. This tool allows you to assign grade points for attendance, lateness, or absence.
- RESPONSE TIMES. Communicate clearly with students when you will respond to emails, discussion posts and other communications. This allows you time off and gives them assurance of times you are available. Likewise, communicate your expectations of your students.
- Review the Course Planning Checklist. Contact ATS to discuss course planning and development.
