Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP)

USDA Food Science, Food Technology and Nutrition Scholarship Application

2+2 Program in Partnership with Clemson University

The goal of the MSP program is to graduate 12 students with a B.S. degree in Food Science and Technology or Human Nutrition that will enable them to pursue rewarding careers in the food and agricultural industries. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded a grant to Clemson University to partner with Trident Technical College (TTC) and Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College (OCTC) for the development and implementation of an innovative program in Food Science, Food Technology and Human Nutrition for students with multicultural backgrounds who are underrepresented in these fields. Through this grant, six students from Trident Technical College will be provided scholarships to enable them to complete their first two years at Trident and their last two years at Clemson University. OCTC will have a similar arrangement. The program requires a commitment for the six students who are selected for scholarships to follow an established schedule of coursework as a group. Thesesix students will also be required to complete two summer enrichment programs. The first (summer 2014) enrichment will be held at Clemson University for one to two weeks (between the freshman and sophomore years). The second summer enrichment will be an international experience, spending time abroad (in 2015, between the sophomore and junior years). Students will have access to a faculty mentor and student support services on both Trident and Clemson University campuses. In order to be considered, students must have SAT, ACT, and/or COMPASS scores which place them into
ENG 101 (English Composition I) their fall semester of their freshman year. Students will have to either test out of MAT 110 (College Algebra) or take MAT 110 the summer prior to their freshman year in Fall 2013. Selections will be made based upon demonstrated interest in working toward a career in food and agricultural industries, strong academic records, and completion of college algebra prior to Fall 2013. Successful applicants should be willing to participate in summer enrichment activities including travel abroad, and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills necessary to work in group and other collaborative environments.
