Chaplains Thoughts

Like the trees this time of year, it seems there isn’t much to look forward to. No matter how bleak their appearance however, there is still life in those branches as they reach upwards. Our lives may be the same at times – bleak in appearance and in our feelings – yet – we should and can always reach up to our God. He knows our hearts and isn’t concerned with our outward appearance.

Alan Burch, Chaplain Post 208

December 1944

Seventy years ago in December 1944, Adolph Hitler attempted to split the allied armies in northwest Europe by means of a surprise blitzkrieg thrust through the Ardennes to Antwerp. Caught off-guard, American units fought desperate battles to stem the German advance at St.-Vith, Elsenborn Ridge, Houffalize and Bastogne. As the Germans drove deeper into the Ardennes in an attempt to secure vital bridgeheads, the Allied line took on the appearance of a large bulge, giving rise to the battle’s name. Lieutenant General George S. Patton’s successful maneuvering of the Third Army to Bastogne proved vital to the Allied defense, leading to the neutralization of the German counteroffensive despite heavy casualties.

More on the “Battle of the Bulge” next month …….

Memory Boards

Our post has had installed a Memory Board at the post home on Curve St.

The names on the board are those veterans of Millis men killed or missing in WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. A second board contains the names of present Millis veterans.

It is our intention to continue this board by adding names of veterans in order to keep their memories alive.

A fee of $50.00 is required for the name plate and the following is required: Name, DOB, and branch of service.

Please contact the Board Committee.
