Music 45: BEETHOVEN

Spring 2016 (Tuesday, Friday 11:00-12:20)

Instructor: Professor Allan Keiler

Teaching Assistant: Jacques Dupuis ()

Email:

Text: Maynard Solomon, Beethoven (Schirmer Books, revised edition)

Assignments: There will be listening and reading assignments regularly. The listening assignments are devoted almost entirely to the works of
Beethoven, from each of the three periods into which his creative life is usually divided. These assignments are the most serious part of the course, and require regular, attentive and sustained listening, always with a purpose and aim in mind. In addition, there will be reading assignments from Solomon’s biography of the composer, and class discussions will include the reading assignments as well as repertory. In addition there will be one short paper on a topic to be assigned, drawn from both Beethoven’s life and work.

Exams: In addition to the paper described above, there will be a midterm and final examination, each to contain three parts: I: listening, II: brief identifications, III: an essay on a more general topic, mostly drawn from the music of the course.

Evaluation: Short essay: 15%; midterm exam: 30%; final exam: 40%; participation and discussion: 15%.

Attendance: In keeping with University policy, after three absences, for any reason, your Dean will be notified. I expect students to attend all classes and to be prepared. My job, when it comes to attendance, is to make each class interesting enough that no student in his or her right

mind will want to miss it.
