SNC1D Lab Investigation - Energy Around a Simple Circuit Name:

Date:

Purpose: To compare the potential difference (V) across the source to the potential difference across the load.

To determine if the potential difference changes when different loads are used.

Apparatus: voltmeter battery bulb (2 voltages) wires

Procedure:

1.  Connect a simple circuit with a battery and a bulb.

2.  Connect a voltmeter across the source.

3.  Record the brightness of the bulb and the potential difference across the source.

4.  Remove the voltmeter and reconnect it across the load.

5.  Record the potential difference across the load.

6.  Replace the bulb with a bulb of a different voltage.

7.  Measure and record the potential across the source and the load.

8.  Record the bulb brightness.

9.  Unscrew the bulb and repeat step 7 and 8.

Observations:

Bulb Type (V) / Potential Difference across Source (V) / Potential Difference across Load (V) / Bulb Brightness (Bright, Very Bright, Dim)
1) / 2)
3) / 4)
Unscrewed bulb / 5) / 6)

Draw a circuit diagram for the first circuits with the voltmeter across the load. (Use the appropriate symbols.)

Discussion:

1)  How does the potential difference across the battery compare to the potential difference across the bulb? (Compare 1 and 2.) ______

2)  How does the potential difference across the lower voltage bulb compare with the potential difference across the higher voltage bulb? (Compare 2 and 4.) ______

3)  How does the brightness of the lower voltage bulb compare to the higher voltage bulb? ______

4)  What happens to the potential difference across a bulb when you unscrew the bulb? ______

______

5)  How does the energy that the battery gives to each coulomb of charge compare to the energy that this charge gives to the load? Explain how your observations led you to this answer. ______

______

Conclusion:

Write two sentences that answers the two parts of the purpose of the lab. ______
