Djurs Sommerland to open new Viking-themed area in 2014

Everyone can follow in the footsteps of the Vikings when the large Danish amusement park

Djurs Sommerland adds yet another themed area to its existing range of attractions. In 2014, the biggest summerland in Scandinavia will be opening a brand new Vikingeland featuring two new rides where guests can experience a thrilling voyage on a Viking ship that swings 20 metres into the air. The park is investing EUR 2.6 million in its new themed area and the new rides.

Brave warriors, imaginative Viking effects and entertaining family rides are the order of the day in 2014, when the new 20,000 m2 Vikingeland opens its doors for the first time at the Danish amusement park Djurs Sommerland.

The first new ride in the new themed area is Drageskibet, a 13-metre-long Viking ship placed in a giant lake and decorated with carved dragon heads, Viking sails and colourful shields. The ship is linked to the shore by a gangway, and when families come aboard they are treated to a thrilling swinging ride, where the whole ship rears up to a height of 20 metres.

“A ride like Drageskibet is great fun and really gets the butterflies fluttering in your stomach. It’s a hugely popular classic in all big amusement parks, and I’m sure it will raise a lot of laughs and cheers from our guests. Placing Drageskibet in the middle of a lake in a giant Viking universe completes the experience. I’m certain that it will attract a great many families with children,” says Henrik B. Nielsen, CEO of Djurs Sommerland.

The other new addition in Vikingeland is also an authentic family ride. The two Vikingetårnene are a real test of strength, where guests have to use their own muscle power to pull themselves to the top of the towers fully eight metres up.

Focus on unique theming

As backing for the two new rides, the whole area is to be decorated with a range of visual effects to provide guests with the feeling of being in a universe where brave Vikings rule.

The new themed area is the latest of Djurs Sommerland’s investments in large, themed rides. Since 2008,
Djurs Sommerland has invested more than EUR 33 million in the park, making it one of the Danish amusement parks to have invested most in new, uniquely themed rides. This strategy has helped the park achieve more than 40 per cent growth in visitor numbers since 2008.

Over and above its themed rides and roller coasters, Djurs Sommerland features expansive park-like areas, a huge Aqua Park and more than 60 rides and attractions for all the family to enjoy. Djurs Sommerland is Scandinavia’s biggest summerland and the fifth-largest tourist attraction in Denmark. The park is situated in the middle of Djursland in East Jutland, just a 30-minute drive from Aarhus, the second-largest city in Denmark.
