Shred The GAP: Bicycle Trip (August 12-17)

Trip Goal:

We want to provide students a fun, safe, and challenging experience that fosters leadership and spiritual growth.

Cost: $60 (Trip)/ $10 For Dinner in Cumberland

Packing List: (What will my student need?)

*All gear will be transported by a support vehicle. Students will only need to carry a water bottle with them during the day.

Clothes:

Closed toe shoes (on the bike)

Sandals (around camp/ for shower)

Sleeping clothes

Day clothes (no muscle shirts or low cut tops, if in doubt don’t plan on bringing it)

*Light colors and wicking materials are great for on the bike.

Hoodie/ Light Jacket for nighttime.

Rain Jacket (we will ride in the rain if we have to/ ponchos don’t work great on the bike).

Toiletries:

Towel/ Washcloth

Deodorant

Sunday (12th): Leave from CCF and drive to GAP trial head at the Homestead water front.

1:30pm: Leave CCF

2:45 pm: Arrive at trail head (homestead water front)/ Unload bikes and depart.

5:30pm: Arrive at Dravo Cemetery Campground.

Monday (13th): Ride from Dravo to Round Bottom Campground

8 am: Wake up and cook breakfast.

9 am: Devotion time

10 am: Breakdown camp and hit the trail. (Break for lunch on trail.)

2pm: Arrive at and begin setting up camp. (Free time to relax.)

4pm: Begin dinner prep

5:30 pm: Dinner Time / clean up

6:30 pm Team Time

9 pm: Rest… sweet, sweet sleep!

Tuesday (14th): Ride from Round Bottom to Ohio Pyle Campground

8 am: Wake up and cook breakfast.

9 am: Devotion time

10 am: Breakdown camp and hit the trail. (Break for lunch on trail.)

2pm: Arrive at and begin setting up camp. (Free time to relax.)

4pm: Begin dinner prep

5:30 pm: Dinner Time / clean up

6:30 pm Team Time

Wednesday (15th): Ride from Ohio Pyle to Rockwood

8 am: Wake up and cook breakfast.

9 am: Devotion time

10 am: Breakdown camp and hit the trail. (Break for lunch on trail.)

2pm: Arrive at and begin setting up camp. (Free time to relax.)

4pm: Begin dinner prep

5:30 pm: Dinner Time / clean up

Thursday (16th): Ride from Rockwood to Frostberg

8 am: Wake up and cook breakfast.

9 am: Devotion time

10 am: Breakdown camp and hit the trail. (Break for lunch on trail.)

4pm: Begin dinner prep

5:30 pm: Dinner Time / clean up

Friday (17th): Ride from Frostberg to Cumberland

8 am: Wake up and cook breakfast.

9 am: Devotion time

10 am: Breakdown camp and hit the trail. (Break for lunch on trail.)

2pm: Arrive in Cumberland/ Load up bikes.

2:45pm Team Time (debrief trip).

3:15pm Grab early dinner at local restaurant.

6:30- 7pm: Arrive at CCF/ Student pick up.

Night 1: Dravo's Landing Primitive Campground
Mile post 124
Dravo's Landing is directly behind Dravo Cemetery, six miles south of Boston Trailhead, one and one-half miles north of Buena Vista Trailhead - it is for trail users only - the campground is NOT accessible by car.
Free. Room for several tents, two fire rings, and two picnic tables. Permanent restroom facilities. Pump for well water.

Night 2: Roundbottom Primitive Campground (Free)
Mile Post 99
Roundbottom Primitive Campground - Free. Roundbottom is adjacent to the trail and Youghiogheny River. Pump for water, permanent restroom facilities, maximum two nights stay, and 2 Adirondack Shelters are located at GAP mile marker 99
(GPS coordinates: N 40 degrees 04 minutes 32 seconds, W 79 degrees 43 minutes 32 seconds, Elevation: 861 feet
Water pump, year around toilet facility, picnic tables, fire ring and fire wood
No reservations for these sites, first come, first served.

Night 3: Ohiopyle State Park - (Commercial)
Half mile (very steep) uphill from mile post 73
The trail connecting the Great Allegheny Passage to the Ohiopyle State Park Kentuck Campground is 0.43 miles in length (2249 ft) and has a change in elevation of roughly 300 feet. It is suggested that trail users walk their bikes while on the connector trail. Bikers should avoid using the roadways to get to the campground. Take marked side trail just north of Ohiopyle High Bridge near mile post 73 at GPS coordinate 39 o 52' 29.6" 79 o 29' 33.2". Bikers should continue through the campground to the contact station for registration.

·  The campground does completely fill on weekends and is best to have advanced reservations.

Night 4: Husky Haven Campground, Rockwood - (Commercial)
Mile Post 43
Near Mile Post 43 - right on the Great Allegheny. Open all year - $10 per night/per person camping. PRIMITIVE Campsites with potable water & bath house 6/10 mile from campsites. Other amenities include, Chemical toilets, Picnic table, trash cans, Fire ring, firewood, Bike wash and Pet friendly. Internet access and cell phone service are available in the office - 400 yards from Rockwood Trailhead (across bridge). There is spotty cell service in this area.

Night 5: Trail Inn Campground, Frostburg, at The Depot - (Commercial)
At Mile Post 15
Up the switchback from the Frostburg Trailhead. Showers, towels provided, Potable water, Picnic tables, grills, Bike wash, Internet access, Coin-operated washer and dryer, and Cafe.

Participant Agreement:

I acknowledge that participation in the activity described above involves risk to the participant (and to the participant’s parents or guardian if the participant is a minor), and may result various types of injury including, but not limited to, the following: sickness, bodily injury, death, emotional injury, personal injury, property damage, and financial damage.

In consideration for the opportunity to participate in the activity described above (the “activity”), the participant (or the participant’s parent/ guardian if the participant is a minor) acknowledges and accepts the risks of injury associated with participation in and transportation to and from the activity. If a dispute over this agreement or any claim for damages arises, the participant (or parent/ guardian) agrees to resolve the matter through a mutually acceptable alternative dispute resolution process. If the participant (or parent/ guardian) and the activity sponsor cannot agree upon such a process, the dispute will be submitted to a three member arbitration panel for resolution in accordance with the rules of the American Arbitration Association.
