Long scar smashed into the jungle (pg.1)
Screen lay between person and the lagoon (pg.2)
Beach interrupted abruptly by the square motif of the landscape; a great platform of pink granite thrust upward uncompromisingly through forest and terrace, and sand and lagoon to make a raised jetty four feet high (pp.6-7)
- Top was covered with a thin layer of soil and coarse grass and shaded with young palm trees
- Palms: fell and dried at about 20 feet high, making a criss-cross pattern
Seaward edge of platform (pg.7)
Banked sand inside the lagoon so that there was a long, deep pool in the beach with a high ledge of pink granite at the further end (pg.7)
Breakers on the reef (pg.9)
Fallen trunk near the little cliff that fronted the lagoon (pg.10)
Conch lay among the ferny weeds (pg.11)
Palm sapling leaned over the lagoon (pg.11)
Pink granite mountain (pg.12)
Jumped off the platform and walked along the sand past the swimming pool (pg21)
Sand (pg.22)
Strip of weed-strewn beach almost as firm as a road ()pg.22
Can’t see around the corner (slow curve) where the rocks get worse (pg.22)
Less jungly stuff and more pink rock (pg.23)
Wrenched and shattered cubes that lay askew, often piled diminishingly on each other (pg.23)
- Pink cliff surmounted by a skewed block, and surmounted again until the pinkness became a stack of balanced rock projecting through the looped fantasy of the forest creepers
- Narrow tracks winding upwards where pink cliffs rose out of the ground
Pink granite of the next cliff was further back from the creepers and trees so that they could trot up the path (pg.24)
- Lead into more open forest (glimpse of the sea)
Lip of a cirque or half-cirque in the side of the mountain(pg.25)
- Blue flower, rock plant, butterflies
Circular horizon of water (pg.26)
Island roughly boat-shaped: humped at this end with behind them the jumbled descent to the shore (pg.26)
- Rocks, cliffs, tree-tops, and a steep slope on either side
- Forward there, the length os the boat (a tamer and tree-clad descent with hints of pink)
- Dense, green, jungly flat of the island but drawn out at the end to a pink tale
- Another island of rock (almost detached) with a bold, pink bastion
Reef enclosed more than one side of the island, lying perhaps a mile out and parallel to what they now thought of as the beach (pg.26)
Beyond falls and cliffs there was a gash visible in the trees(pg.27)
- Splintered trunks and a drag, leaving only a fringe of palms between the scar and the sea
- Platform jutted into the lagoon
The other way (from the scar) there was no reef (pg.27)
Every coign of the mountain held up trees (pg.27)
Bathing pool to Ralph’s left (pg.27)
Rude shelter faced the lagoon and seemed very near to falling down (pg.50)
Opening in the forest (pg.58)
- More sunshine fell
- Creepers wove a mat that hung from the side of an open space
Built castles at the bar of the little river (pg.62)
Drinking from the river (pool where the waterfall is) (pg.85)
Pool at the end of the river; a tiny mere dammed back by sand and full of white water-lilies and needle-like reeds (pg.65)
Landward end of the scar (pg.70)
The place of assembly was roughly a triangle (pg.82)
- Big log for Ralph
- Long log polished by restless seats along the top to Ralph’s right
- Four small logs (furthest was springy) to Ralph’s left
- Grass untrodden in the platform’s centre
Pink screes lay near the water’s edge (pg.72)
Tall grass at end of island with castle
There were only a few more yards of stony ground and then the two sides of the island came almost together so that one expected a peak of headland
- Instead of this, a narrow ledge of rock, a few yard wide and perhaps fifteen feet long, continued the island out into the sea
- There lay another of those pieces of pink squareness that underlay the structure of the island
- This side of the castle was the pink bastion they had seen from the mountain-top
- Rock of cliff split and top littered with great lumps that seemed to totter
There was one flat rock there (near forest), spread like a table
