Dear Parent/Guardian,
There are students in our school community with a severe allergy to Peanuts and/or Tree Nuts. For some students with severe allergies, the smell, touch, or taste of these foods can be life threatening, even in small amounts. Strict avoidance is the only way to prevent a severe allergic reaction. Peanuts and peanut/nut oil can be found in many foods, including baked goods and most chocolate candy.
We must do all that we can to provide our students with a safe learning environment. In an effort to allow all students to participate fully in classroom activities, please consider food choices for your child’s classroom parties that do not contain peanuts, nuts, or peanut oil. However, please note that food for all school wide events must be peanut/nut free. Please purchase food with labels that can be checked for ingredient safety. It is important to read the entire label of all foods being purchased.
Below is a list of snack suggestions that do not contain peanuts/nuts. This list is provided as a reference. Please consider healthy and nutritious alternatives such as fresh fruits, dried fruits, vegetables, yogurt, and cheese. Always check with the classroom teacher to determine if there are children with food allergies other than nuts/peanuts.
Cheese
Fig Newtons Mott’s Fruitsation Tootsie Rolls
Fruit Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Twizzlers
Yogurt Skittles Vegetables
Graham crackers String Cheese Wheat thins
A “peanut free” table is available in the cafeteria for each lunch period for students with peanut/nut allergies. Their friends may join them for lunch, provided their lunches are peanut/nut free, meaning they DO NOT have any food item in their lunch that contains peanuts or nuts.
If you have questions, you are welcome to call the Health Office. We thank you for your assistance in this important safety issue.
Sincerely,
Nicole Crawford, Principal Carol Baron, School Nurse
