What’s the big deal about underage drinking? According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, kids who drink are more likely to:

·  Be victims of violent crimes.

·  Engage in risky sexual behavior

·  Have serious problems in school.

·  Be involved in drinking related traffic accidents

·  Develop alcohol dependence

According to the Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS), Greene County youth age 12-17 reported higher alcohol use than neighboring counties and the state: Roughly 37% reported using alcohol within the past 30 days. Our kids are trying to tell us something. Teen MISSION strives to prevent and/or reduce the early initiation and regular use of alcohol among middle to high school youth. The MAGIC Moments Newsletter gives a complete list of alcohol-free social and recreational opportunities for youth and families. These events and activities provide healthy alternative activities that keep our youth safe and alcohol-free. It is important to promote and participate in community activities that support Our Youth,. Our Neighborhood. Our MISSION.

READING AND WRITING CLINIC:

Waynesburg University will be hosting a Free Reading and Writing Clinic for local students in Kindergarten through the Sixth Grade. The clinic will be held from 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning on February 14th and ending on April 20th on the 3rd Floor of Miller Hall (51 W. College Street, Waynesburg). FREE INCOME TAX PREPARATION:

Mondays & Wednesdays until April 6th from 5 PM to 8 PM Community Action Southwest will offer free income tax preparation to individuals whose income is less than $49,000 at the end of 2010. VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE:

Community Action Southwest invites you to become a volunteer. This is a chance to meet new people in your community while helping others. Volunteer opportunities during the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program season (January 31 to April 6 ) include:

·  Greeter --welcome tax filers to the site and ensure that tax filers have all the documents & info needed to complete their tax return. No training needed.

·  Screener --Interview tax filers prior to tax preparation to ensure the best quality return is completed. Screener receives free training and must be qualified at the basic level covering the completion of wage earner type return.

·  Tax Preparer --Assist low to moderate income wage earners complete their tax return. Tax preparers receive free training and must be qualified at the basic level.

·  Quality Reviewer --Reviews all returns filed that evening to ensure quality. Quality Reviewers receive free training and must be certified at the intermediate level covering the completion of returns for wage earners who receive pension income and more complex Forms 1040.

SPRINGTIME STORYHOUR REGISTRATION:

The Children’s Department at the Bowlby Public Library is currently taking registration for Spring Story Times! The story hours began on March 8th and will run through May 12th and are for children of all ages. For more information please call the library at 724-627-9776.

DAFFODIL DAYS:

Now until March 20th, the annual “Daffodil Days” will be celebrated across the nation. This year marks the 37th Anniversary of the American Cancer Society’s campaign to sell flowers and other items to help raise money for cancer research.

COMPUTER CLASS/WORD 2:

March 18, 21, 25, 28 and April 1, 4 and 8th from 1:30 PM to 3 PM Community Action Southwest will be holding FREE computer classes. Word 1 is a prerequisite to taking this class. AFTER HOURS DR. SEUSS PARTY:

March 18th from 4 PM to 8 PM the Bowlby Public Library (311 N. West Street, Waynesburg) will host a special afterhours event for all ages. The Family Literacy and the Children’s Departments at the library will be sponsoring the celebration: “The Cat in the Hat’s going green, and at Bowlby he’ll be on the scene! DINNER DANCE:

March 19th from 6 PM to 10 PM, the Greene County Historical Society will hold a dinner dance to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. This event will be held in the new National Guard Armory on Evergreene Drive in Franklin Township. This fundraising event will include dinner prepared by culinary art students from Greene County Career and Technology Center and dancing to the big band sounds of the “Beaver Bop Cats.” Tickets are $35 per person and all proceeds will benefit the Historical Society. GREENE COUNTY PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB:

March 22nd 7 PM the Greene County Photography Club will meet at the Waynesburg Bible Chapel (800 E. Greene Street). The club competition this month is Valentine pictures. Trudy Roney will also present a program on the subject of “Lighting and Portraits.” New members are always welcome to join.

VISIT FROM LOCAL AUTHOR:

March 23rd from 5 PM to 6 PM David Howard, a local children’s book author, will be paying a visit to the Bowlby Public Library. ZUMBA CLASSES/MON VIEW PARK:

March 23, March 30th and April 6th are the dates set for the remaining Zumba Classes being offered by the Greene County Department of Recreation. The classes will be held from 6 PM to 7 PM at the Mon View Roller Rink and Community Center located at 377 Stoney Hill Road in Greensboro. Classes will cost $7.00 per session. Kellie Ann Maute is the instructor and participants are encouraged to wear sweat-absorbing clothes and good support shoes. Also bring along water and towels. Zumba uses a variety of different rhythms making toning your body and strengthening your cardiovascular system an entertaining activity. PRODUCE TO PEOPLE:

March 24th from 10 AM to noon the Produce to People distribution will be held at the Greene County Fairground (this distribution usually falls on the 4th Thursday of the month). Free food distributions are available to all eligible persons. All participants are requested to please bring their own bags or boxes for packing their items. No proof of income or residency is required at this distribution, however everyone must sign a self-declaration of need form at the distribution site. No one may pick up food for another person unless pre-authorized at the Salvation Army. If you have any questions, please call Sister Audrey Quinn at 724-852-1479. COMPUTER CLASSES:

Beginning on March 24th Flenniken Library will be offering a series of FREE adult computer classes geared toward helping people with little or no computer experience. SENIORS FOR SAFE DRIVING:

March 24th from 5 PM to 9 PM the Seniors for Safe Driving will present a safety program at the Carmichaels Activity Center (100 Nemacolin Road, Carmichaels). This program is geared to drivers age 55 years and older and is a certified program by the state Department of Transportation. Those who complete the program will be eligible for a 5% discount on car insurance premiums for three years. However, those who have never participated in a senior-driving program are required to attend a two-day program. SKATE AND DANCE:

March 25 from 6 PM to 9 PM (admission $5) will be the skate hours and from 9 PM to 11 PM (admission $4) will be the dance hours for this event. PARENT TRAINING: “PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE”:

March 28the beginning at 5:30 PM at the West Greene High School Library (1352 Hargus Creek Road in Waynesburg) Attorney Natalie Ruschell will present a special informational session on helping parents plan for their children’s future. Topics will include: Guardianship, Estate Planning, Special Needs Trusts, Inheritance and SSI Benefits. Childcare will be provided, along with refreshments and door prizes. LOOK GOOD…FEEL BETTER:

March 28, April 25, May 23, June 27, July 25 and August 29 from 10 AM to noon the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good…Feel Better” Program will be held at the Southwest Regional Medical Center in the Guesman Room (350 Bonar Avenue, Waynesburg). Pre-registration is required by calling 800-227-2345. This is a free program for women in cancer treatment. The workshop is facilitated by trained cosmetologists who teach women with cancer how to understand and care for changes in skin and hair that may occur during treatment. The program is offered in partnership with Personal Care Products Council Foundation and the Professional Beauty Association/National Cosmetology Association.

PAVING THE PATH TO KINDERGARTEN:

March 28, April 18, May 23 and June 27 are the scheduled dates for the remaining 4 FREE sessions which focus on helping to prepare your child for school. The sessions will be held at the Waynesburg Family Center (1505 Morris Street in Waynesburg) and will take place from 10 AM until 11:30 AM with the exception of the last session on June 27th (which will run from 11 AM to 1 PM). March 30 through April 2nd at 7:30 PM the Waynesburg University Players Spring Musical will be “State Fair” featuring the music and lyrics of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
