Philip Hartley
<A HREF="hartley/hartley.htm">Hartley genealogy</A>
Philip Hartley was born Abt. 1755, and died Abt. 1829
Philip Hartley is found in the 1800 Allegheny County, Maryland Census, (pg 5) head of household, age category 5 years and more;
3 males under 10 (Thomas, 1791; Abijah 1793; Joseph 1795) 1 male 10-16 (John 1789); male 16-26 (?); 1 female under 10
(Margaret) and 1 female 45 & on (wife Mary). T'he History of Alleghany County, Maryland, states that the family "Hartley" settled in the early 1700's in the rea of a town named "OldTown". Old Town, Maryland is located on the north bank of the Potomac River in UleghanyCounty, the south bank of the Potomac River is in Virginia (now West Virginia). It is possible that 'hilip and Mary at one time or another lived in Virginia.In the early 1800's, Philip migrated to south central Ohio, settling in what would become PikeCounty. He is listed in the book entitled "Early Scioto Valley, Ohio Settlers" as settling there around 1812. His name also appears in a publication "Southern Ohio Tax Payers" as paying chattle taxes in 1826 and 1829.
The Scioto Gazette", Vol. XV, Thursday, 20 Jul 1815, No. 748, pp. 33, "A list of letters left at the post office in Dhillicothe I ncludes....Phillip Hartly...", this puts Philip Hartley in Ross County in 1815.
