LESSON PLAN PURPOSE:

To initiate leader development by introducing Fourth Class cadets to different definitions of leadership and provide them with insight on how to recognize positive leadership characteristics. THIS CLASS SHOULD BE HIGHLY PATICIPATORY.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

Fourth Class Cadets will be evaluated by developing their own definitions of leadership in break out groups.

Read The Citadel Leader Development Program, Second Edition prior to teaching this class.

  1. Introduction
  1. Introduce yourself and your position.
  2. Show cadets each leadership quote (slides 1-15). Give them time to think about the quote. For each slide, facilitate a shot discussion on what the quote means and demonstrates about leadership. Discussion is key. The objective of these quotes is to get the cadets to start to think about leadership.
  1. Group Work
  1. Split the class up into working groups to draft their own definition of leadership.
  2. Allow for 10 minutes to complete this exercise

C.Have each group share their definition of leadership

D.After all groups share their definitions, show the different definitions on slide 19.

  1. Point out that there are different definitions of leadership
  2. Though there are different definitions of leadership, positive and effective qualities
    of leadership are common in all definitions.
  3. Different definitions exist because leadership must be adaptive to the situation.

  1. Lead a discussion about the qualities of good leadership that the cadets have experienced prior to

Arriving at The Citadel.

  1. Have the Cadets provide specific examples.
  1. Discuss the qualities of positive and effective leadership found in the College Catalogue.
  1. Discuss the 5 Steps of the CTM and how they apply to good leadership.
  1. What You Can Expect from Your Cadet Leaders
  1. Discuss the characteristics that the Fourth Classmen can expect from their leaders. Most importantly as XO, make sure the leaders in your company are exhibiting these characteristics throughout the year.
  1. Explain to Fourth Classmen that they have started to develop their own leadership style and show them where they are on the Leader Development Model. Explain throughout the year, they will be further refining their personal definition of leadership.
  1. Introduce Fourth Classmen to their Squad Leaders.
