Warren Merritt reported there was going to be a meeting on June 25 to review the Fireground Expertise Curriculum as they were waiting for feedback from Zone 3. They are still aiming for a final approval by August.

Commendation letters were going to be sent out to the additional members that assisted with the EVIP curriculum.

GUEST SPEAKER(S):

Don Warner, Paramedic with Shoreline Fire, has his own moulage business called Monsters, Moulage, and Mayhem. He can provide basic or advanced moulage training to your personnel, or can assist with training, MCI, DWI or any other kinds of drills. Elenjo Schaff at Eastside Fire is hosting a class taught by Don Warner in June and highly recommends the usage of moulage for CBT classes to add more realism to the scenario. Patty Ousley also uses Don for the EMT final exams, and he also assists with the moulage for the EMS Online modules. For more information, contact Don Warner at:

AFFILIATE REPORTS:

KING COUNTY DEPARTMENT

OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT & REGION 6 HOMELAND SECURITY TRAINING & EDUCATION COMMITTEE:

Marty Grisham reported Heather Kelly had sent out an email regarding grant money being available from the State. They are having a meeting on June 10 and wanted input for training ideas. If you want grant funding, you will need to go through the group representative for each of the categories. He continued by reporting the Training & Education Committee is building a 5-year training plan so if anyone has ideas for training not normally on their training schedule that the region can benefit from, please submit it to one of the committee members as soon as possible.

KINGCOUNTYEMS:

Patty Ousleyreported that for the past two years they had a working relationship with Seattle Fire and though it worked well, they would not be able to use the Joint Training Facility for the upcoming class. So the locations of the 2008 Fall EMT Class are scheduled as follows:

  • Tuesday Lectures at BellevueFireTrainingCenter
  • Saturday practical skills sessions will be at Eastside Fire & Rescue

Application Deadline is: July 11

Student Pre-testing: August 5

CPR Testing & Orientation: August 19

First Lecture: Tuesday, September 2

First Practical: Saturday, September Practical Final: Saturday, November 22

State EMT Written Exam: Tuesday, November 25

The letter to training officers will be sent out via email in the beginning of the following week.

John Jerin also spoke to the membership about the plan of an EMS Online structure change. He disseminated a proposed schedule for 2009, 2010, and 2011 modules. With the feedback of the value of the Street Medicine module, they are planning the six annual modules to include Street Medicine in two of the three year cycle. On the third year, Infectious Disease will be part of the six required courses. After a discussion of the membership, there were several departments that used the online Infectious Disease module to supplement their annual requirement, so John indicated they would continue to include Infectious Disease on the other two years, but it would be under the “On-going classes” section and not placed in the regular schedule.Discussion ensued and ideas were presented on topics for the infectious disease modules. John also added that the software requirements are changing to be able to improve the videos to a larger size.

Roger Kacmarcik reported that the ODA will continue to deliver training that will prepare students to fill the role of company officer and to meet the Fire Officer I & II Standards. Roger continued by telling the membership of the intent to work towards getting college credits for the ODA classes, and we have had some challenges in working out the issues that have come up, and because the original plan was developed with the out-going chair of the committee, it’s difficult to know the original proposal and plan. Although the committee is committed to providing quality classes and instructors to meet the needs of the fire departments, we have some issues to resolve along the way. Discussion ensued regarding upcoming classes that were supposed to be covered by the college and didn’t have instructors. However, the committee worked diligently to provide instructors and the classes will be held as scheduled.

WEBSITE COMMITTEE:

Jeff DiDonato reported this committee will be meeting later today to discuss options for September when our current contract will need to be renewed. Along with this, the committee will also be discussing options for purchasing a database since our current one crashed and the need has become more urgent.

PURCHASES OF THE MONTH:

  • Marty Grisham reported they had some ‘dead spots” in radio communication in the Mall, and so the Mall was forced to place a repeater within their facility.
  • Kevin Olson reported Valley Regional Fire Authority was going to be purchasing a Metz Ladder Truck.

OLD BUSINESS:

DATABASE NEEDS:

Jeff DiDonato had reported the latest plan during the Website Committee Report.

.NEW BUSINESS:

There wasn’t any new business to report.

GOOD OF THE ORDER:

  • Marty Grisham reported Gary Sacha had been in a motorcycle accident and was doing okay.
  • Marty Grisham informed the membership when completing the application form for the Training and Education funding through OEM, terminology tends to be different, so to be sure to not use acronyms for training and equipment exercises.
  • Elenjo Schaff had sent out an email with a date to the membership from John Robinson from Kent Fire regarding the ‘free’ trial class being offered. It was scheduled for June 26, which is the “Stand Down for Safety” week, so he will need to change this. Elenjo sent a sign-up sheet around for any interested persons and John will get in touch with them to set a date if there was enough interest.
  • Brian McMahan, representing Region 10 reported on the Everyone Goes Home.com Program. He informed the membership of the activities, lesson plans, and videos that are available for use during the Stand Down for Safety week. Also, there aren’t any advocates in KingCounty on this committee, so if anyone is interested they can contact Brian for additional information. The “Courage to be Safe” class that was recently held in Spokane with great interest may be offered in SWWA in the future. This program is designed to talk about safety and the whys for training.
  • Rick Ashleman reported they are looking at doing a FallRecruitAcademy, but they need more participants, so if you have anyone to put through the academy, let him know.

With no further business, a motion was made by Kevin Olson and seconded by Jeff DiDonatoto adjourn. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 1120.

(Draft meeting minutes were respectfully submitted by Elenjo Schaff, Executive Board Secretary on June 12, 2008.)
