Renaissance Notes

Renaissance Period dates - 1400 to 1600

Means: Rebirth and refers to knowledge. It is characterized by combining areas of art, science and philosophy.

Merchants and artists became more important in society and it became an age of exploration.

Famous Explorers – Vasco de Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Marco Polo and Christopher

Columbus. America was discovered during this time.

Inventions of the day: clock, gunpowderartillery, eyeglasses,printing press, flushing toilet,

microscope, telescope,submarine, the match.

Art in the Renaissance consisted of painting, sculpture and decorative arts.

Two of the best known artist of the time were:

Leonardo da Vinci for The Last Supper The Mona Lisa

Michealangelo for The Creation of Adampainting the Sistine Chapel.

Women became more powerful.

Other important people:

Martin Luther for his reformation of the Catholic Church.

William Shakespeare was the best known author of the day. He wrote great works such as: Macbeth, The Tempest, Hamlet, Othello, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Leaonardo da Vinci was called TheRenaissance Man because he could do many things well.

Instrumental music and dancing were a huge part of the Renaissance Period.

Dance was popular for entertainment and theater.Three main forms of dance were:

Folk Dance - spontaneous and traditional to the area.

Court Dance - were choreographed b royal dancing masters and were very elaborate.

Ballet Dance - originated from the court dance. Had to be trained in order to perform.

Names of dances were the Branle, Pavane, Galliard, Allemande.

The Three M’s of music in the Renaissance – Madrigal, Mass, Motet

Three styles of music were:

Madrigals - usually secular love songs and performed by small groups. William Byrd was best known composer with song “Hey Ho Greenwood”

Motet - polyphonic work with four or five voice parts singing one religious text. Often sung acapella. Josquin Des Pres was the best known composer.

Mass - important part of the Catholic church religious service. Usually sung in Latin and in a specific order. Giovanni Palestrina was the best known composer.

Texture of music:

Monophonic – melody by itself,

Polyphonic – 2 or more voices with equal importance and

Homophonic – all parts of music move together and have equal importance.

The most popular instrument of the time was:

Lute which is a string instrument.

Other instruments used were:

Recorders, Harp, Lizard, Sacbut, Violin, Shawm and various types of drums.
