Explanatory notes
1 Definitions
System software refers to software employed by the computer system rather than end-users e.g. operating systems.
Application software refers to software operated by end-users rather than the computer system itself e.g. word processing.
Peripherals refer to input, output, and storage devices e.g. monitors, keyboards, printers, modems, scanners, external hard drives, optical drives, accessory cards.
Single-user means an operating system that is only usable by one person at a time.
2 Performance of all outcomes is to be carried out in accordance with organisation standards and procedures, unless otherwise stated. Organisation standards and procedures may include – quality assurance, documentation, security, communication, health and safety, personal behaviour.
3 The assessment context for this unit standard must be suitable to meet the criteria for level 5 in the NZQF Level Descriptors, which are available by searching for “level descriptors” at www.nzqa.govt.nz.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Plan the installation of a single-user personal computer and peripherals.
Evidence requirements
1.1 The plan includes a review of the computer installation specification and identifies and explains the feasibility of the specification in terms of resources and user requirements.
Range installation specification may include but is not limited to – operating system requirements, cabling, supported peripherals, power supply(s), internet connection and configuration.
1.2 The plan identifies resources required for the installation in terms of their allocation.
1.3 The plan includes a review procedure which ensures the final outcome meets user requirements.
1.4 The plan ensures that resources required for the installation will be available at the time of the installation.
Outcome 2
Install a single-user computer and connect peripherals.
Range a minimum of five peripherals are connected.
Evidence requirements
2.1 The hardware units match the installation specification.
2.2 The hardware units are located according to user requirements and the installation specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
2.3 The hardware units are interconnected according to the installation specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
2.4 The hardware units complete the manufacturer diagnostic tests free of errors.
2.5 The system software is configured and customised according to the installation specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
Outcome 3
Test the installation of a single-user computer and connected peripherals.
Evidence requirements
3.1 The computer system operates according to the installation specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
3.2 The testing procedure meets the manufacturer guidelines.
3.3 The test results are recorded according to organisation requirements.
3.4 The system software and application software communicate with the hardware according to the installation specifications.
Outcome 4
Gain user acceptance for the installation of a single-user computer and connected peripherals.
Evidence requirements
4.1 An explanation of the operating procedures supplied by the manufacturer allows the user to begin operating the system.
4.2 An explanation of training and support options allows the user to obtain training and support.
4.3 A review of the installation and installation specification allows the user to agree that the installation has been completed.
