Rationale and Support:

The importance of preventing falls especially in the hospital when health costs are being tightened due to the new Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAPS) resulted in everyone going through additional training for fall prevention. The patient-safety standards with fiscal efficiency were being scrutinized thoroughly throughout the hospital and by Medicare (Spoelstra et al., 2013). The clinical manager paid for my trip to Boston in 2011 for obtaining the most recent studies on falls. Some of the information that I returned with was to help in establishing the new falls prevention program. The increasing number of cancer survivors will translate into an expansion of the number of older adults with sequelae to cancer (Boyle, 2012). The findings of multiple studies evaluated by Spoelstra et al. (2013) indicated that the fall rate was higher in older adults with cancer compared to a matched sample of adults without cancer.

Reflection:

The prevention of falls in a community population was evaluated by Spoelstra et al. (2013). Fall prevention will become a critical competency for oncology nurses with fiscal incentive due to HCAPS providing safety information to the community (Boyle, 2012). The prevention of falls needs to be adequately documented with anyone that has decreased functionality due to advancing age, visual disturbance, or muscle weakness (Spoelstra et al., 2013). Concerns for comorbid conditions and functional decline as are the prescribing of medications which can affect cognition should be evaluated with the prescribing of medications (Spoelstra et al.,2013). Currently, I am sandwiched with taking care of my husband and his parents with functional declines and comorbid conditions. I know the effects on the family and the struggles if any fall occurs.
