As it is now over two years since your patient underwent sleeve gastrectomy surgery we will no longer routinely follow him/ her up. However, in line with NICE CG189 recommendations, it is important that he/she is followed up in the long-term to ensure that no problems arise. We would therefore be grateful if you would continue this patient’s follow-up indefinitely.
The only specific recommendations are that all sleeve gastrectomy patients have a daily oral complete A-Z multivitamin and mineral supplement. Forceval is available on prescription, although patients are encouraged to purchase their own over the counter equivalent. They also require 3 monthly vitamin B12 (1mg) injections lifelong.
We also recommend that all sleeve gastrectomy patients have annual blood tests as follows: FBC, U&E, LFT, TSH, PTH, Glucose, Lipids, Folate, Ferritin, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Selenium. Any deficiencies should be corrected with appropriate supplementation. Blood levels should be monitored 3
months after commencing supplementation, to assess response. Any deficiency found will require lifelong nutritional supplementation. If you are unsure which supplement to prescribe, please contact the bariatric service.
If at any stage you are worried or have any concerns about this patient we would be very happy to review him/her again. Should your patient become pregnant please refer to the bariatric dietitians. Equally if there is a local weight management service in place your PCT may prefer you to refer the patient on to them for long term follow up.
Many thanks for your help in this matter.
Kind regards.
