Dear Parents,
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) explains that students who read over the summer “retain and sharpen literary skills during the months they are out of the classroom.” Because all of our students work hard during the school year to grow in academic skills needed for the future, summer reading helps students to retain and even cultivate those skills. In addition to nurturing a love for reading, we want to sharpen your student’s writing skills.
All students entering sixth grade in the fall will need to purchase the book required for our summer reading program. The book isLawn Boy by Gary Paulsen. We will begin the school year with discussions as well as other activities from the book. Your child will receive a grade for his/her completion of the summer reading assignments. All assignments will be due no later than August 25, 2017. The writing assignmentsare as follows:
- If you could start your own business, what would you choose to do? Decide on three reasons you would start this business, and write a paragraph explaining each reason. This is a total of three paragraphs.
- Create a flyer to advertise your business. Look at magazines and newspapers for ideas. This may be done by hand or on a computer. Color makes an ad more appealing.
If your child qualifies for Pre-AP reading class, he/she should select a 2nd book of his/her own choice and be prepared to provide a basic book report. The teacher will give more instructions during the first week of school. The assignment will be due August 25, 2017.
You may purchase a copy of the book at the RIS Awards Day on May 25th for $5.00 each. Mrs. Rogers will sell copies in front of the lunchroom. Copies will be sold through the front office over the summer as well. You may also purchase the book outside of school. Digital text is allowed.
We hope you and your family enjoy a safe and relaxing summer,
