“Jesus’ Reverence for God”

John 2:12-25

  1. Jesus possesses a great passion for the things of God (vs. 12-17).
  1. Jesus observed the Passover.
  1. The Jews were commanded to observe the Passover annually.
  1. The Passover was to be observed in Jerusalem.
  1. Jesus confronted those who were defiling the Temple.

Because of the practices of the temple priests, God’s house actually was a robber’s den.

(Exodus 12:42-51; 23:14-17; Deuteronomy 16:1-8; Psalm 69:9)

  1. Jesus possesses the authority of God (vs. 18-22).
  1. The Jews asked Jesus to give a sign to validate His authority.
  1. Jesus gave the sign of His death and resurrection.
  1. Jesus’ disciples remembered this sign.

Although the disicples did not completely understand, they continued to follow Him.

Their willingness to follow Christ was not based upon their intellect and understanding, but their willingness to trust in Him.

  1. Jesuspossesses the knowledge of the sincerity of man’s faith (vs. 23-25).
  1. Jesus performed many signs while in Jerusalem observing the Passover.
  1. Many observed Jesus’ signs and believed in Him.
  1. Jesus did not entrust Himself to them.

Deuteronomy 16:1-8

“Observethe month of Abib andcelebrate the Passover to theLordyour God, for in the month of Abib theLordyour God brought you out of Egypt by night.2You shall sacrifice the Passover to theLordyour God from the flock and the herd, in the place where theLordchooses to establish His name.3You shall not eat leavened bread with it; seven days you shall eat with it unleavened bread, the bread of affliction (for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste), so that you may rememberall the days of your life the day when you came out of the land of Egypt.4For seven days no leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory, andnone of the flesh which you sacrifice on the evening of the first day shall remain overnight until morning.5You are not allowed to sacrifice the Passover in any of yourtowns which theLordyour God is giving you;6butat the place where theLordyour God chooses to establish His name, you shall sacrifice the Passover in the evening at sunset, at the time that you came out of Egypt.7You shallcook and eatitin the place which theLordyour God chooses. In the morning you are to return to your tents.8Six days you shall eat unleavened bread, andon the seventh day there shall bea solemn assembly to theLordyour God; you shall do no workon it.

Exodus 23:14-17

14“Three times a year you shall celebrate a feast to Me.15You shall observethe Feast of Unleavened Bread; for seven days you are to eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the appointed time in themonth Abib, for in it you came out of Egypt. And[a]none shall appear before Me empty-handed.16Alsoyou shall observethe Feast of the Harvestofthe first fruits of your laborsfromwhat you sow in the field; also the Feast of the Ingathering at the end of the yearwhen you gather inthe fruit ofyour labors from the field.17Three times a year all your males shall appear before the Lord[b]God.

Matthew 26:59-61

For if themiracles had occurred inTyre andSidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago insackcloth and ashes. 22Nevertheless I say to you,it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon inthe day of judgment than for you.23And you,Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You willdescend toHades; for if themiracles had occurred inSodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day. 24Nevertheless I say to you thatit will be more tolerable for the land ofSodom intheday of judgment, than for you.”
