Course Description:

Provides the beginning student in health occupations with the basic entry-level knowledge and skills

required for a variety of health occupations. Introduction to Health and Medical Sciences is a strongly recommended pre-requisite to the Health Assisting course. Health Assisting reinforces basic information and then builds upon it. Students will begin to understand the rationales behind the actions of the health care worker and will apply that knowledge in the classroom setting.

Goals/Objectives:

  • Develop skills and knowledge common to all health care professions
  • Body structure and function
  • Principles of health
  • Microbes and disease
  • Medical Terminology
  • Introduces basic-entry level skills required for some specific health occupations
  • Develop knowledgenecessary to provide for basic health needs, incorporate safety procedures, apply nursing procedures, and meet the nutritional needs of clients/residents
  • Summarize an overview of national health and patient care systems
  • Develop leadership skills through participation in HOSA and classroom activities
  • AHA CPR/First Aid Course completion if resources available
  • Develop workplace readiness skills
  • Upon completion of the second semester, students may be eligibleto take the NOCTI Health Assisting examination

Instruction:

Group projects, research, and presentations may be required for this class. Material may be presented by lecture, handouts, overheads, various audiovisuals, computer software,internet, and class discussions. Student competencies will include bulleted items on the student competency record. This record is available for all students to review in the classroom and on my website.

Evaluation:

Class participation /assignment/journal/worksheet gradeswill count 20%.

**This grade is very important and has a significant impact on your final average. So be an active

participant in your learning process!!

Medical Terminology quizzes will count 20%.

Tests/Projects/Quizzes/Modules will count 60%.

I reserve the right to make adjustments as needed.

Classroom Rules:

Students are expected to abide by all regulations set forth in the School Handbook. Citizenship grades will be lowered if inappropriate classroom behavior occurs. Be RESPECTFUL. Respect me. Respect yourself. Respect your classmates. Respect any/all guests in our room. Raise your hand if you have a question. Be PREPARED. Bring your materials to class everyday. Be ON TIME. You should be in your seat by the end of the Tardy Bell. Be RESPONSIBLE. Get your assignments done on time. Arrangements for work missed due to absences must be made with me within 3 days upon return to school. It is your responsibility to make these arrangements. Tests will be assigned in advance. If students are absent on test day, make-up tests will be administered the next day the student is in class, unless there are unusual circumstances.Please be aware that attendance is crucial due to the use of software in the class. I will be available after school one day a week for makeup work if you make prior arrangements with me.Be POSITIVE. Check negative attitudes at the door. You have an abundance of potential. Reach for the stars!
