1.  General requirements

This section provides general requirements for pulse-width modulated (PWM) adjustable frequency drives, herein referred to as AC Drives, for use with NEMA design AC motors, or standard IEC motors.

The AC drive shall provide a power from 0,18kW to 4 kW and a voltage supply from 120V (single phase) to 240V (single phase or three phases).

The AC drive is a system for controlling the rotational speed of an AC motor and providing on demand the right torque for a simple application in industry or residential areas.

To avoid any mismatch between the motor and its control equipment, the AC drive shall be capable of auto adjustment by automatic measurement of the motor parameters without motor rotation.

The AC drive shall be noiselessly (< 50dba). There is a fan management for the AC drive above 0,75kW. Until 0,75kW, the AC drive doesn’t need a fan.

The AC drive shall provide a braking torque up to 70% of the nominal torque without resistor and up to 150% of the nominal motor torque with an optional braking unit at high inertia.

2.  Applicable standards

The AC drive is qualified to address all the major standards in order to be worldwide commercialized.

The AC drives shall be:

¨  CE marked, conforming to European Low Voltage (2006/95/EC modified from 73/23/EEC and 93/68/EEC and EMC (2004/108/EC modified from 89/336/EEC) Directives, and Machinery directive N0 98/37/EC modified by 98/79/EC,

¨  UL marked according to UL 508C,

¨  CSA marked according to CSA 22.2 N14-05,

¨  C-Tick marked to comply with Australasian Communication Authorities,

¨  NOM marked (Mexican area),

¨  GOST marked (Baltic and Russian area).

Moreover it shall comply with National and International standards and the recommendations for electrical industrial control devices (IEC, EN, UL, NFC and VDE). Major standards of IEC are listed below:

Standard / Title
IEC 61800-3
IEC 61800-5-1 / Semiconductor power converters for adjustable frequency drive systems environments 1 and 2.
Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems safety requirements – Electrical, thermal and energy.
IEC 60068-2-3
IEC 60068-2-6
IEC 60068-2-27 / Environmental testing; Part 2-3: Tests - Test Ca: Damp heat, steady state
Part 2-6: Tests - Test Fc: Vibration (sinusoidal)
Part 2-27: Tests - Test Ea and guidance: Shock
IEC 60529 / Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)

3.  Specific requirements

3.1.  Protection

The AC drive must have fault detection against the risks of equipment destruction from component’s failures. The AC drive shall:

¨  be protected against short-circuits between motor and phases;

¨  be protected against the over current between motor phases and earth;

¨  have a thermal protection against overheating;

¨  have an input phase loss protection, in three-phases;

¨  be protected in the event of line over voltage and under voltage;

¨  have a thermal protection integrated in the drive;

¨  be IP20;

¨  have coated cards in order to fight the pollution (IEC 60721-3-3 classes 3C3 and 2S2).

3.2.  Commissioning

The AC drive must be “plug & play”. For simple applications, the factory settings are enough to get a quick start (a quick start sheet is delivered with the product).

The navigation of the AC drive is done by the jog dial. The START; STOP/RESET buttons on face allow to have a local control.

The AC drive can be configured power OFF in his box thanks to a loader toll. This possibility allows saving time: the user can configure 10 drives power OFF during 5 minutes.

The AC drive shall be compatible with friendly PC software which allows the user to configure the drive and to store configurations. This PC software must have the oscilloscope function which facilitates the diagnostics. The PC software allows selecting the number of the parameters that the user wants (by selecting the box ‘YES’ or ‘NOT’ on the screen of the software).

The AC drive allows the configuration with a cell phone throughout Bluetooth. The user will find the application for his cell phone on a website. He can download it free of charge.

3.3.  Control and power connections

The control voltage for the digital inputs and outputs shall be 24Vdc.The input logic type source (positive logic) or sink (negative logic) can be configured.

The internal power supply shall incorporate automatic current feedback that protects the internal power supply against wrong connections or short-circuits. The transistor logic outputs will be current limited and will not be damaged if short-circuit occurred.

One relay output contact will be provided. The relay will indicate AC drive fault status or no line voltage present (NO - NF relay).

The power terminals of the AC drive are compatible with the ring terminals.

The analog inputs have an accuracy of +/-1% at 25 °C.

The logic inputs have an update time lower than 20 ms (with a precision of +/- 1ms).

3.4.  Integration on a solution offer

The AC drive must have the possibility to be integrated on automatism solution. The AC drive shall have an integrated RJ45 port for Modbus as a standard product.

3.5.  Software

The AC drive shall offer a simple menu divided in 3 modes in order to find a parameter easily:

¨  “Reference” ,

¨  “Monitoring” ,

¨  “Configuration” with 2 parts (“My Menu” and “FULL Menu”)

The AC drive shall provide 3 motors control laws:

¨  “Standard” (based on the U/f law) which allows to have a smooth and a quick start for all types of motors,

¨  “Performance” (based on SVC law) which allows a TUN and is compatible with the different type of motors,

¨  “Pump & fan” which allows saving energy.

The AC drive shall offer a personalized menu (named “MyMenu”). The user can customize the AC drive thanks to PC software. The user can choose 25 parameters to personalize his menu.
