SUBJECT: / Additional Materials for Mathematics Subject Matter Committee (SMC) Agenda Items
A number of additional materials for the Mathematics Subject Matter Committee Agenda Item are attached to prepare you for the May 3–4, 2012, Instructional Quality Commission (IQC) meeting. The additional materials are for Item 12.D.4., Recommendation of Members of the Curriculum Framework and Evaluation Criteria Committee (CFCC) to the State Board of Education (SBE).
These materials will assist you in recommending CFCC members to the State Board of Education and ensure that the CFCC applicants you recommend meet the California Code of Regulations, Title 5 (5 CCR), requirements regarding the composition of the CFCC. The regulations state that:
  • The CFCC mustconsist of between 9 and 20 members.
  • A majority of the members must be teachers who teach students in kindergarten through grade twelve.
  • At least one of those teachers must have experience teaching English learners.
  • At least one of those teachers must have experience teaching students with disabilities.
  • At least one member must be a Content Review Expert (CRE) and hold a doctorate in mathematics or a related field.
  • The CFCC members must be reflective of the various ethnic groups, types of school districts, and regions in California.
All members of the IQCare encouraged to review the attached materials to prepare for participating in the discussion and decision-making process that will result in a recommendation to the SBE of a CFCC that not only meets the regulatory requirements but also has the knowledge and experience to develop a draft framework that will support implementation of the common core state standards for mathematics.
Attachments 10 and 11
Use the blank worksheet (Attachment 10) to record your personal recommendations in each of the various required categories. Keep in mind the 5 CCR requirements listed above and fill in the worksheet as if you were selecting the CFCC yourself. The summary of information provided in Attachment 11(CFCC Applicant Summary) can assist you with identifying the applicants you would like to recommend and serves as a quick reference that may be useful during the discussion at the IQC meeting.
Attachment 12
Attachment 12 provides more comprehensive information on the applicants, including a profile, application, and résumé for each applicant. It is important that you review this information before you develop your list of recommendations.
Profile
The profile summarizes information from the full application and contains the applicant’s responses to questions about his or her experience teaching English learners and students with disabilities. The profiles may be useful when you are considering which applicants best meet the requirements for teachers with experience teaching English learners and students with disabilities and for appointing a majority of teachers who are currently teaching students in kindergarten through grade twelve.
Application
The application includes all the information provided by the applicant in the online application with the exception of personal contact information which has been redacted. No edits or corrections have been made to the information provided by applicants. In the application, you can see the applicant’s responses to fourquestions related to his or her knowledge of the common core state standards for mathematics, their experience with standards-based instruction, and theirexperience developing curriculum and serving as an instructional leader. These responses provide a more complete picture of each applicant’s experience and knowledge and can help you differentiate between the applicants.(Please note that whenthe questions for conflict of interest disclosure [in boldface type] appear on the application with no response from the applicant, the applicant answered “no” to the question. If an applicant answered “yes” to a conflict of interest question, the answer appears just after the question.)
Résumé
Applicants had the option of submitting a résumé. In some cases, applicants chose to also provide letters of recommendation. Personal contact information has also been redacted on résumés submitted by CFCC applicants. No edits or corrections have been made—the résumés appear as submitted by the applicants.
