Helping Your Child at Home
Here are suggestions for helping your child with math at home…
1. Ask your child to show you the answers to today’s assignment in his/her math binder. Have your child explain his/her thinking for some of the solutions and see if your child seems to “get” it. Make sure your child is organized with the use of the binder.
2. If you need help understanding the math for a lesson, consider visiting the following website: http://connectedmath.msu.edu/ (At this site you will find information at the parent information tab.)
3. Keep track of how your child does on his/her basic skill quizzes. These basic skills will include: fractions, fraction operations, integer operations, ratios, percents, order of operations, and scientific notation. Your child should have pre-tests in the binder to review and study from.
4. In addition, the SCASD has established an IXL account for your child. This is an online resource where your child can practice their math skills. Practice on the IXL account will be assigned throughout the year.

Student Expectations
Students need to give their best effort, come to class prepared and show respect at all times.
Student Materials
Students need a pencil and/or pen, a colored pen and a 1.5 or 2 inch binder separated into 3 sections. The labels for each section of the binder are the following: Classwork & ACE Problems, Graded Assignments, and Basic Skills.
Each student will be given a graphing calculator (TI-83 plus) to use in class. If you want to buy a calculator you may, however, it is not required. If you choose to buy one, I recommend the TI-84 Plus. This model can be used throughout high school.
A” Typical Day”
Students will spend the majority of each class period completing questions in cooperative learning groups. At the conclusion of each class we will discuss the main ideas from the day’s lesson, clarify work that needs to be completed at home and write this info in the assignment book.
Homework
Students will be assigned homework every night. The homework should take anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes. If a child cannot do a problem they need to copy the question in their notebook so that I know they tried. One point will be awarded each day for homework. Homework assignments are posted on the SCOODLE page for the class.
Tutoring
Extra help is available for all students in several formats. I am available during areas for math help on certain days. In addition, a peer tutoring group S.T.O.M.P. (Students Tutoring of Math Problems) will be offered during day 2 Area for students who need some extra practice.
Group of The Unit
Students work in cooperative learning groups. The seating is changed for each unit. Groups who complete assignments on time, attend class regularly, cooperate, and behave in a respectful manner are eligible for winning “Group of the Unit.” They win a small prize (pencil, sticker, candy, etc.) and have their picture taken for the hallway bulletin board.
Grading
Students will be graded on quizzes, tests, partner problems and reflections. Grades are posted regularly. They can be accessed through the parent portal.
Parents are welcome to visit class at any time. You do not need to give me advance notice. However, you must sign in as a visitor at the office before coming to class
