Book Fair

An amazing event, where you can purchase scholastic books for you and your child. Teachers also post book wish lists for their classrooms. It’s held twice a year, and is a PTA fundraiser. Volunteers will be needed to help with the book fair. It is another great way to stock up on holiday and birthday gifts. The first book fair will be held Mon, October 21st through Saturday, October 26th.

Booster Aides in Classroom Pledge Drive.

This is a campaign to raise the money to pay for an aide in each classroom. The boosters provide an aide to TK through 5th grade for a certain number of hours per week. The teachers share the aides and utilize them in the classroom to help assist smaller reading groups, provide extensions and interventions, etc. This is an amazing program and has helped boost our API scores tremendously. Parents are asked to donate what they can, anything is welcome and appreciated. The suggested amount is half or more of what you are saving on preschool tuition. Forms have been sent home with your child.

Boosters Auction

A super, fun, adult only evening. The Booster Auction is chance for Lin Howe parents to socialize, eat, drink and most importantly bid on the silent and live auctions. Items range from class made art projects to gift cards, trips, tickets etc. This year it is being held on Saturday, April 26th. We welcome all volunteers to help run the event and any and all donations. Flyers will be sent out with more information or contact Michelle Eagle with any inquiries.

Booster Meetings:

This is a monthly meeting held by the boosters to discuss what is coming up and what needs to be done .Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

ELAC:

ELAC stands for English Learners Advisory council. This is a parent group that focuses on the needs of our English Language Learners. The group meets approximately once a month. Spanish translation is provided.

Fall Carnival

A super fun fall carnival held on our playground. It is a PTA sponsored event with booths, bake sale, food and fun for all. Volunteers and donations will be needed for this. Flyers will be sent home before the event. This year it is going to be Saturday, October 26th.

Family Fun Night:

These are free or low-cost PTA sponsored events held approximately once a month throughout the year. They are fun events for the whole family. They are a way for families to get to know each other. Some events may be making candy houses, tailgating, movie night etc. Flyers are sent home before each event.

Facebook Page:

The Lin Howe Facebook page is not officially associated with Lin Howe. The Facebook page is run and organized by parents. It’s one way to keep up to date with all changes etc. Search for the page and ask to be friends. Ellie (a parent) will then accept you.

Gift wrap Fundraiser:

This is one of the PTA fundraisers to raise money for our school. Envelopes are sent home with brochures to sell gift wrap, magazines, and gifts. It’s a great way to purchase holiday gifts and support the school at the same time. This year the fundraiser is from September 24 to October 8.

Green Team

This parent group is a Booster Club Committee. The committee meets monthly to discuss ways to keep Lin Howe “Green.” Parent volunteers from this committee also work with our student Green Seats and help organize the “Adopt An Area” program.

Growing Great/ Edible Garden:

This program is run by parent volunteers and is a booster club program. Parent volunteers teach nutrition lessons a few times each year in 3rd-5th grade classrooms. Parent volunteers also assist students in grades K-5 in planting, maintaining, and harvesting our gardens located by room 26. Our kids are given the opportunity to plant vegetables, watch the vegetables grow, and then eat the vegitables at the Salad Party (the culminating event). Kids love this.

Hiking Viking

This event is organized by the Safe Routes To School Committee. Hiking Vikings takes place on Friday mornings starting in mid-October. Students meet at Carlson Park at 8:15 or at Ince and Higuera at 8:20 and walk to school together as a group with parent volunteers accompanying them. It is an organized walking group to encourage students to go “Green” and walk to school. Parent permission slip is required. Watch for the flyer.

International Walk/Dance to School Day

This event is organized by the Safe Routes To School committee. Lin Howe students, parents, and staff members typically meet at City Hall before school and walk/dance to School. This is a really fun event.

Jump Rope for Heart

This event is typically organized by the physical education teacher. Students are asked to get sponsorships to jump rope. The money raised is given to the American Heart Association to help fight heart disease.

Lin Howe Has Talent (Talent Night)

A talent show which will highlight the amazing talent we have at Lin Howe.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Conference Dates are Dec.8, 9, 11,12,15,16, and 2014

This is a time to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss progress, concerns, etc.

These are early dismissal days (1:25 TK, 1:45 K-5)

Penny’s for Leukemia

This event is organized by Lin Howe staff. A box is sent home for kids to put penny’s in to raise money for Leukemia research.

Picture Day

Individual and class pictures are taken on this day. An envelope is sent home beforehand if you want to order the photos. If you miss this day, there are make ups for individual pictures but your child will not be in the class photo.

PTA:

PTA is an organization comprised of teachers, staff members, and parents. The organization raises funds to support school programs, provides parent education through speakers, and sponsors school events. PTA meetings are held monthly, usually on the second Thursday of the month.

PTA Membership Drive:

The PTA Membership Drive is a focused effort to encourage Lin Howe Families to join the PTA. This will help our school provide awesome programs for our kids. It is $5.50 per person to enroll. If you haven’t enrolled please just fill in form and give it to your child’s teacher or drop it off in the front office.

PTA Meeting:

PTA meetings are a time when PTA members get together to discuss past and upcoming events. Everyone is invited to attend the meetings. They are usually once a month on a Thursday night. Information about meetings is sent home or posted on the school calendar.

Room Parent

The room parent is a liaison between the teacher and classroom parents. It is a tool to help keep parents informed of what is happening in the school etc.

School Site Council (SSC)

The School Site Council is comprised of parents, teachers, school staff members, and the principal. All members are elected by the group they represent and serve two year terms (with the exception of the principal). This group discusses the school site plan (including school-wide goals), the school safety plan, and some school spending.

All important information is located there. The calendar is located under the parent tab. A list of teachers (staff directory), with an option to e-mail the teachers, is under the “about us” tab. This is a great way to communicate with teachers. Also, PTA and Booster information and event updates can be found on the website.

Spring Bash

The Spring Bash is a PTA event. A fun filled night of entertainment for the whole family.

Targeted Parent Teacher Conferences

These are also a time to meet with teachers BUT these are at the teacher’s request. The teacher will let you know if they would like to schedule a conference time.

Target Parent Conference Dates are October 6, 7, 2014 and April 23, 24, 2015

These are also early dismissal days for all students.

Teacher Work Day (Non-Pupil Day)

August 20, 21, 22, 2014, Jan 20. There is no school for students so teachers can attend professional development.

Volunteer Registration Process

In order to be able to volunteer in the classroom, enter the room during the day, or go on field trips you need to have completed the volunteer process. This involves finger printing, TB testing, and filling in some forms. It takes a few weeks so start ASAP. Anissa in front office can guide you through the process. Forms are available in the office or on line on the school website.

Walk-a-Thon

The Walk-A-Thon is a PTA fundraiser. The event is currently being planned for late February as a culminating event to heart month. Students will be asked to get sponsorships to walk laps.
