Program Overview
The Tom Joyner Foundation Teacher Quality Initiative with Paul Quinn College provides pre-service teachers with up to eight semesters of scholarships for tuition and fees. The amount of each scholarship from the Foundation is determined after all financial aid, other than loans, and other scholarships are awarded to the student.
A brief overview of this teacher quality initiative is provided below.
The Teacher Quality Initiative Provides:
- Eight semesters of tuition and fees after financial aid awards (other than loans) have been applied.
- Placement assistance as AVID tutors in local schools @ $10-12 dollars per hour.
- Mentoring throughout the program.
- Assistance with placement in first teaching position.
- Degree plans designed for completion in four years.
- Opportunities to attend summer seminars across the county that are designed to enhance particular teaching strategies

Yes, a degree plan audit will be completed to determine exactly which courses are needed at Paul Quinn College to earn the teaching degree that is sought.

Timelines vary. It is important that each applicant have their transcript sent to the Foundation in order to complete the application process. Applicants must ask their college to mail an official copy of their transcript to:

Question
What should I do at the end of each semester to continue receiving scholarship funds?
Answer
- Complete the FASFA and TEACH GRANT before deadlines each academic year.
- Follow the degree plan as outlined and maintain full-time status with a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
- Submit your grades to Kathleen Parsons () no later than one week after the end of each semester.
- Pre-register for the next semester and submit a copy of your billing statement and class schedule to Kathleen Parsons (). Be make sure your class schedule is attached. Make sure to complete this task during the same week that you receive your billing.
