Relevance

Being a LMS means more than just teaching the skills of a responsible digital citizen. It also means modeling those skills for your entire school community. One way I do that is by utilizing the website CommonSenseMedia.org. This website is designed to share anything and everything that has to do with being a responsible digital citizenship. I discovered this website by completing the Digital Citizen Resource Snapshot as part of the ISTC 651 course. For this project, I was required to examine and evaluate an online resource that focuses on digital literacy and being a responsible digital citizen. I found that CommonSenseMedia.org “is dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.” I not only use this source to learn about new apps, websites and read reviews on everything from games and movies to books and TV Shows, but I also use this to teach my students about digital literacy and being responsible digital citizens.

One of the lessons I taught my students this year, was developed from the lesson-Rings of Responsibility, from the Digital Literacy Curriculum on CommonSenseMedia.org. I taught this lesson to students in grades 3-5 in the library. The lesson focuses the different levels of responsibility students will face as digital citizens; being responsible for themselves, being responsible for their friends and family and being responsible as a member of the larger digital community.

Analysis

When ever I discuss anything that relates to digital literacy, I now realize how important it is what a say as a LMS. I am looked at as a leader in my building and need to model how to be a responsible digital citizen because I know what it takes to be a responsible digital citizen. I need to protect my private information. I need to use resources ethically. I need to adhere to copyright laws. I need to know how to navigate the digital world and evaluate tools and resources. I also need to know how to share this information with my entire school community. This is what it is like to be a LMS in today’s educational world.
