Purpose / This theory-based unit standard is for experienced people in the fellmongery or leatherprocessing industries.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of the New Zealand system of wool grading,and wool washing and wool drying; and describe the usages of slipe wool, used in leather manufacture.

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the New Zealand system of wool grading used in leather manufacture.

Evidence requirements

1.1The details of the New Zealand wool grading system are described in terms of factors affecting wool yield.

1.2Common wool terms are described in terms of their use in the industry.

Rangecommon wool terms include but are not limited to – type, colour, britch, dingy, cotted, micron, fine, coarse.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate knowledge of wool washing for leather manufacture.

Evidence requirements

2.1The purpose of wool washing is described in terms of the equipment used in the wool washing process.

2.2The purpose for wool dewatering is described in terms of the equipment used in the wool dewatering process.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate knowledge of wool drying for leather manufacture.

Evidence requirements

3.1The methods by which wool is dried is described in terms of the machines used.

Rangemachines include but are not limited to – brattice dryer, suction drum dryer.

3.2The process of wool drying and regain is explained in terms of the factors affecting the process.

Outcome 4

Describe the usages of slipe wool for leather manufacture.

Evidence requirements

4.1End products manufactured from slipe wool are described in terms of their types.

Rangetypes include but are not limited to – knitted, blended.
