A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in honor of Cecil R. Madison Sr. upon being the recipient of the 2004 Lyman T. Johnson Award.

WHEREAS, Cecil R. Madison Sr. was born on October 22, 1943, and he is a native of Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Cecil R. Madison Sr. was the loving son of the late William and Carrie Madison; he is the devoted husband of Catherine Madison; and he is the loving father of two sons, Cecil R. Madison Jr. and Steven M. Madison; and

WHEREAS, Cecil R. Madison Sr. became a social activist at the age of 14; he was one of the original members of the Lexington Chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and he was secretary of the organization from 1959 to 1962; he and other CORE members successfully participated in the marches in downtown Lexington to desegregate movie theaters, restaurants, and the lunch counters at Walgreen's and Woolworth's; and

WHEREAS, Cecil R. Madison Sr. was present the night that Louie Armstrong came to Lexington to play at the Phoenix Hotel, but then refused to get off the bus in support of the marchers; and he also met and marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Cincinnati, Ohio; and

WHEREAS, Cecil R. Madison Sr. began his tenure with the University of Kentucky on November 12, 1968, and he is the first African-American to be hired full-time by the University of Kentucky libraries; he has maintained a determined spirit throughout his years at the University of Kentucky libraries, beginning as a supply clerk and managing the mailroom, then as an assistant in the Business Library, the Reserve Room, and the Federal Depository Department at Young Library; today, he is one of the most senior members of the University of Kentucky library staff, and because of his determined spirit, another door was opened for others to follow in his footsteps; and

WHEREAS, the Lyman T. Johnson Award is presented to individuals of African-American descent whose faith, hard work, determination, and academic preparation have positively affected the lives of people on the University of Kentucky campus, the city, the state, and the nation to "uphold the torch of excellence" for the next generation; and

WHEREAS, Cecil R. Madison Sr. is the recipient of the prestigious 2004 Lyman T. Johnson Award;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby applaud and congratulate Cecil R. Madison Sr. upon being the recipient of the prestigious 2004 Lyman T. Johnson Award. We wish him success in all future endeavors.

Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Cecil R. Madison Sr.
