Student Garden Coordinator Position Descriptions
Sustainability and the NEXUS Community Garden seek two Student Garden Coordinators to oversee garden operations during the growing season. Primary duties for both positions include:
· promotion of garden mission and events within Norwood, Evanston, and Xavier communities
· oversight of volunteers in the garden
· support of participant gardeners during weekly work times
· staffing of weekly workdays, community building events, and workshops/field trips
In addition, the Agricultural Student Garden Coordinator will focus on:
· preparing, planting, and maintaining communally-farmed plots
· coordinating produce donation harvest and deliveries to area food pantries
· monitoring and strategizing to mitigate pests in the garden during the growing season
· research related to growth and maintenance of the NEXUS project
· ensuring that garden areas are watered and kept neat (weed and trash-free)
· supporting the work of the Education Student Garden Coordinator
In addition, the Educational Student Garden Coordinator will focus on:
· facilitating community partnerships with local organizations planning to bring groups of children to the garden weekly
· planning curriculum, gather supplies, and host/teach three groups of children visiting the garden weekly
· planning community building events and accompanying workshops/field trips
· supporting the work of the Agriculture Student Garden Coordinator
The ideal candidates will have a sincere interest in gardening and working with the gardener community and children from the community, be committed to the goals of the NEXUS Community Garden, be willing to become an active member of the NEXUS Steering Committee, and be able to work well with a diversity of participants including students, faculty, staff, and neighborhood residents. No prior gardening experience is required although some educational background with children is necessary for the Educational SGC position.
This position is approximately 5 hours/week for 20 weeks of the year on average (from mid-April through mid-October) with the majority of hours occurring on a relatively flexible schedule mid-May through late August. Evening and weekend availability required.

Students will receive a $1000 stipend and course credit through SUST 391: Land Practicum Fall 2015 (with a possible 2 credit extension or as an approved independent study within a particular discipline).
