VBS 2014 D3 Student Extras Conference

Purpose Statement

This one-hour conference is designed to introduce student leaders to the rotations options of Worship, Recreation, Crafts, Refreshments, and Missions of theLifeWay’sAgency D3 student VBS. The VBS D3 student leader guide, student book and accompanying DVD-ROM will be introduced.

Focal Wall Description

Attach theme poster to wall

Attach Bible Verse Poster to wall

Attach “Question of the day” poster from DVD to the wall. (All 5)

Have projector and computer or DVD/TV ready

Room Setup Description

Have chairs in rows in front of focal wall.

Have a table at the front of the room for resources. (Leader Guide, DVD, Student Book, other VBS materials)

Have area set up for recreation.

Have a table ready with supplies for crafts. (Can be located anywhere in the room.)

Have a table ready for snacks. (Can be located anywhere in the room.)

Decoration Suggestions

Decorate the room using suggestions from page 6 of leader guide.

Science /CSI/Spy decorations can be used (lab coats, test tubes, evidence bags).

Audio Visual Needs

  • Video Projector and computer or TV/ DVD player needed
  • If no blank wallis available, plan to use a screen.
  • CD or MP3 player

Teaching Steps

Step 1 – As they enter

  • Have music from playlist playing as on the CD or MP3 player
  • Have nametags and markers available for each participant

Step 2 – Warm up (3 minutes)

  • Play D-Deuce Video 1 (DVD Video Session 1). This will bring the focus to the front and get participants in investigative thinking mode.
  • Have them call out what is missing or what was added.

Step 3 – Welcome(4 minutes)

  • Introduce yourself.
  • Explain that this year students will investigate questions people have about Jesus. They are special agents finding evidence to answer the question for the day.
  • Explain that this conference will be cover the rotations in student VBS. (Worship,Recreation, Crafts, Snack, and Missions)

Step 4 – Overview (3 minutes)

  • Introduce Bible Verse – 1 Peter 3:15
  • Use poster on focal wall and encourage the participants to say the verse together.
  • Introduce Motto – “Discover, Decide, Defend”
  • Introduce the life questions for the day.

Day 1 –Is Jesus Really God’s Son?

Day 2 –Was Jesus More Than Just a Good Man?

Day 3 – Was Jesus’ Death Real?

Day 4 – Is Jesus Alive?

Day 5 – What Do I do with the Evidence about Jesus?

Step 5 – Worship (7 minutes)

  • Have a worship song from the playlist playing as you begin. Allow the participants to listen or sing along.
  • Show video, “A Lost World” (DVD Session 1)
  • Ask participants what the different views were and if they have heard similar answers.
  • Explain that during VBS students will be discovering truths.
  • The first truth to be investigated is: “Is Jesus really God’s Son?”
  • Give history lesson on Nicaea. (p.8 leader guide)
  • Tell participants that each night, as part of worship, there will be a guest coming to talk tostudents about truth.
  • Read 1 Peter 3:15.
  • Pray with participants.

Step 6– Recreation (7 Minutes)

  • Divide into groups
  • Evidence Transfer (page 38 in the leader guide)
  • Give each group the following supplies
  • Gum balls
  • 2 empty two-liter bottles
  • duct tape
  • Instruct the groupsto put the 2 bottles together mouth to mouth withall the gum balls inside one of the bottles. Tape the bottles together at the center.
  • When bottles are assembled, have each group get in a line.
  • Give the first person in line the bottle. Explain that on your signal they will flip the bottle over and begin to shake the “evidence” into the empty bottle. Once all the evidence has been transferred they pass it to the next person. They will repeat the process until each group member has transferred the evidence.

Step 7 – Crafts (7 minutes)

  • Have participants come to the craft table.
  • D3 Duct tape Key Fob (page 21 of leader guide)
  • Allow each person to select 2 duct tape colors.
  • Have them cut one piece 14 inches long, one piece 1 inch long and the other color 2-¼ inches long.
  • Lay the 14-inch-long strip, sticky side up,on a flat surface.
  • Slowly fold the tape in half length-wise.
  • Slide the key ring to the middle of the strip. Fold in half with the keyringin the fold.
  • Fold one of the 1-inch strips of tape over the 2 open ends vertically.
  • Slide the key ring to the taped ends and wrap the 2-¼ inch strip of contrasting tape horizontally just below the key ring to cover the taped ends.
  • Use permanent markers to write the motto across the key fob and decorate as desired.

Step 8 – Snack (4 minutes)

  • Have a prepared Classified Operations (for display) from VBS 2014 Snack Rotation

Recipe Card

  • This is a leader snack and does not require students to assist in preparation. They will only consume.
  • Sushi in Disguise (from 2014 VBS Snack Rotation Recipe Cards)
  • Have one snack prepared as an example.
  • On a plate for each participant, provide a rice crispy treat (must be pliable), a candy fruit strip, and a gummy candy.
  • Have participants wrap the fruit strip around rice crispy treat and place the gummy candy inside. Allowparticipants to eat.

Step 9 – Missions (7 Minutes)

  • Put a blank flip chart page on the wall.
  • Tell Participants that Missions is a very exciting part of VBS. Even if their schedule is tight,missions isDVD Driven and could be included while eating snack.
  • Explain that each mission session has 5 parts.

1. Introduction – 4 Clues and 1 Word (DVD)

2. Discover – Connexxions (DVD)

3. Decide – (DVD)

4. Defend – a challenge for students each day.

5. Mobilize Me Moment – A statistic and prayer request

Bonus – on Day 1 the 2014 Mission Project is introduced (p. 14 leader guide)

  • Session 3 Missions (p 14 leader guide)

1. Introduce 4 Clues and 1 Word - Day 3 (DVD)

  • Have participants put a thumb up if they know the answer.

2. Discover – Connexxions (DVD Session 3)

  • Ask how Abraham found out about Jesus.
  • Discuss how everyday activities help Abraham Share God with others.

3. Decide – Video – “Hoop Dreams” (DVD Session 3)

  • Ask how church planter Scott reached the community.
  • Discuss how this compares to what Abraham is doing.

4. Defend

  • Brainstorm and list on the flip chart random acts of kindness that students can do
  • Show “Random Acts of Kindness” sheet for students to use.

5. Mobilize Me Moment

  • Share that 8,742,486 people live in the metro Chicago area; however, there is only one evangelical church for every 31,800 residents. Prayfor a church plant in the Midwest.

Step 10 Conclusion (3 Minutes)

  • Ask for and answer any questions.
  • Remind participants that these rotations provide a great way to include all types of learners.
  • Pray for leaders and students.
