Required textbooks/supplies: You will receive a CD which contains all course materials, required reading and emulation software as well as extra pharmaceutical and medical software for personal use on a PDA at no charge.

Course Description: / This course focuses on the creation of database applications and record management in healthcare using the latest technology in handheld devices. This course includes concepts and techniques for the systematic creation, storage, reproduction, distribution, retention of medical and patients’ records, and electronic drug databases. Emphasis on hands-on application of database management software in healthcare for the Desktop, Pocket PC and Palm will be covered. Of special importance will be information on E-Prescribing. By 2010, the government will require that all prescriptions be submitted electronically!
Course Objectives: / Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
  1. Develop database application for use in rotation and/or for drug information
  2. Inventory pharmacy and/or medical office records
  3. Organize those records (normalization)
  4. Create and modify database structures for various platforms
  5. Enter records in a database
  6. Maintain and use records
  7. Write database queries
  8. Generate database reports
  9. Link database files
  10. Purge records
  11. Explain methods of maintaining active and inactive records
  12. Determine appropriate classification systems for various file groups
  13. Describe security for records
  14. Build relational tables, queries, forms, reports using MS Access 97
  15. Use a handheld PC in healthcare environment

Students will be evaluated based on their performance and attendance. All database assignments must be submitted on time. Quizzes cannot be made up. No makeup for project will be given, unless the instructor has approved the missed assignment in advance.
