Mission Statement:
The Great South Bay Quilters’ Society, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering an interest in quilting, encouraging the preservation of our quilt heritage, and offering year round instructional opportunities for its members.
The society provides a meeting where quilters can support each other’s growth and development. The membership year is from September 1 through June 30. Meetings start @ 7:00 p.m. The annual membership fee is $25. Members receive a bi-monthly newsletter and are eligible to participate in workshops. Monthly meetings are held at Joyce Fitzpatrick Senior Center. / A Message from Claire………….. Community and Caring
Community Projects vsCharity Projects:
I’d like to talk about our community and charity projects that we do here at Great South Bay Quilters. Every year, each member has a requirement to donate a community service project. This can be either 20 born to read bags, a baby quilt or a lap robe quilt. Of course, you are welcome to donate more than one of these if you want. This year, we’d like to expand just a little on the lap robe quilt choice. The children’s’ hospice bereavement group quilts were very well received last year and so many of our members enjoyed making these colorful quilts. We would like to offer our members the choice to make either a traditional lap robe quilt or a hospice bereavement group youth quilt this year to keep this program ongoing. Please use the hospice quilt pattern with bright, happy fabrics and refer your questions to JoAnn Incalcatera regarding this quilt.
Each year our guild chooses a charity project to work on throughout the year which we donate to the coordinating charity in the spring. You’ll remember our great success with the Town of Islip Meals on Wheels placemats, huggy bears, toiletry pouches, etc. This year we have chosen three projects to give everyone a choice. Charity projects are completely volunteer. Choose what you’d like to make and make as many as you want. We offer dog beds for shelter pets, port pillows for cancer patients, and walker caddies for the elderly. The guild received a donation of fabric this summer and we will be able to offer our members free fabric for these projects plus you can attack your stash. Our three projects this year will be explained in detail at our October meeting plus we will have a tutorial on the born to read bags.
I believe in thinking globally and acting locally. Our guild has been so generous in the past and I am certain that, once again, we will have a wonderful year. Thank you for your vibrant, giving spirit!
And a Few Words From Carole…….. Welcome back to a new year of quilting, friends and creativity.
As you go over the 2017-2018 meeting schedule, you will see we have packed this coming year full of great projects and workshops. Using the annual questionnaire, the program committee tried to fulfill requests, and I think this year offers lots of different types of projects. There is something for everyone! We are also expanding the “charity projects” to include three choices.
Thank you to the program committee who met several times in June and July to pull this program together.
This coming spring marks a milestone for our guild. We will celebrate our 35th anniversary! With all of us working together, it will be a productive and fun year.
So, sharpen your needles, fill those bobbins, and put the pedal to the metal!!!

If you have a tip or trick you would like to share, please let us know. It does not have to be related to quilting.

Handy use for shower hooks.

Hook 2 shower clips to the top part of the basket. Make sure you position the clips far enough apart, allowing the holder to be as sturdy as possible. Then clip each basket to the towel rail that hangs inside the shower. Drop all of the grandkids toys in, and that was it! This basket is so stable you don’t have to about toys falling in the tub when not in use. Use your shower hooks to hold items you use for your shower.

Or instead of spending a lot of money for a handle for your cutting mat, go to Harbor Freight and pick one up for $5.

Do you know of a quilt show or event we would be interested in, why not let us know about it!
