INTRODUCTION

Thank you very much for your interest in our academy.

Stimpson Avenue Academyis a large, multi-cultural primary academy located in Northampton town centre with 442 pupils on roll (January 2018). The academy largely serves the local community, though not all pupils live locally. The academy is culturally diverse, multi-lingual and inclusive. Pupils, parents and staff are proud of the diversity and committed to maintaining our inclusive ethos.

Our vision is to ensure that all pupils become confident individuals, responsible citizens and independent learners. We want our pupils to develop a lifelong love of being curious, of asking questions, considering, reflecting, knowing how and when to challenge and always wanting to find out more – a zest for learning for life. To achieve this, we work toensure that a highly skilled and effective team of adults enables every child to be happy and excited about coming to school and there is a genuine partnership in the learning process. Our enquiry-based curriculum is designed so that learning is relevant, fun and meaningful. We work to deliver excellence in teaching to ensure that all children reach their potential. We recognise that every child is an individual and we personalise learning to suit each child’s needs. Our pupils engage fantastically in lessons and they are proud of their school and their achievements. Our staff team is committed to their welfare and growth and provide a friendly welcome for new colleagues.

Our most recent Ofsted inspection graded the Academy as Requires Improvement in March 2017. Since then we have been committed to rapidly improving so that we can be Good at the next inspection. An HMI monitoring visit in November 2017 endorsed the progress we have made and continue to make, at pace, towards being Good.

LEADERSHIP & TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES

There are a number of opportunities for excellent primary teachers and outstanding leaders. Applications are invited both from recently qualified and experienced teachers ready for a leadership role. Salaries, pay spine and responsibility payments (TLR) will be in line with experience.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Purpose

The essential quality of the Assistant Principal (AP) is to provide all teachers with an example which clearly demonstrates the commitment required to achieve the highest possible standards and sustain Academy improvement that ensures good and outstanding outcomes for the pupils and the academy.

The AP has defined responsibilities and line management leadership to address whole-Academy issues and Academy improvement planning. This includes holding staff to account for standards and quality. In addition, the AP is responsible for the tracking of pupil achievement and the formative use of assessment data to improve achievement within a key subject area. They also lead on curriculum organisation (including the timetable), performance management for identified teaching staff, and support the day-to-day organisation, systems and procedures in the Academy.

The AP has a vital role to play in all aspects of the Academy. In particular, the following duties are assigned to the Leadership Team and are central to improving standards and for monitoring the strategic vision of the Academy.

  • Liaison and policy development with other partner academies;
  • Managing professional development and review;
  • Organising and implementing the curriculum and assessment;
  • Liaison with the local community, the home and other agencies;
  • Monitoring and evaluating standards of teaching and learning and outcomes;
  • Leading and monitoring the administrative team, the deployment of resources and finance administration;
  • Organising and managing day to day procedures to enable the smooth running of the Academy; and,
  • When required, and in the absence of the Principal and Deputy, to undertake the professional duties of the Principal of the Academy.

The APis part of the Senior Leadership team. Tasks are shared and responsibilities allocated according to the strengths within the team. The specific tasks referred to in this job description may be delegated to colleagues and middle leaders where and as appropriate. The day to day management responsibility is to monitor, in a systematic way, the work of colleagues in the Academy to ensure important tasks are finished.

The main areas of responsibility and the assigned duties are specified below.

Teaching and Learning

  1. Planning and preparing courses and lessons; including implementing new initiatives such as curriculum review, assessment systems, monitoring and evaluation, pastoral support, SEN and Inclusion.
  2. Setting and marking of pupil’s work.
  3. Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
  4. Setting aspirational targets for staff and pupil achievement, including monitoring and intervention strategies.
  5. Preparing pupils for examinations and tests, supervising these and reporting and interpreting results.
  6. Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils.
  7. Providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters.
  8. Consulting and communicating with parents.
  9. Participating in meetings arranged for all the above.
  10. Advising and co-operating with the Principal on the preparation and development of programmes of work, resources, teaching methods, assessments and pastoral arrangements.

Professional Development, Improvement and Review

  1. Participating in arrangements for the appraisal of performance (performance management policy) as a reviewer and ensuring that staff maintain a Teacher’s File.
  2. Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work.
  3. Participating in arrangements for training and continuing professional development.
  4. Participating in staff meetings which relate to the Academy, curriculum, administration or organisation.
  5. Formulating an annual Improvement Plan indicating priorities within the guidelines produced for staff which includes:
  6. a review of developments;
  7. proposed objectives and related tasks for subject and whole-academy issues;
  8. staff professional development needs and implications;
  9. financial details; and
  10. the monitoring and evaluation of the proposals.

Management and Administration

  1. Co-ordinating and managing the work of colleagues.
  2. Co-ordinating the review, development and management of curriculum and pastoral functions, including the Academy Improvement Plan.
  3. Co-ordinating administrative and organisational tasks on a day to day basis.
  4. Monitoring the work of colleagues in the organisation of teaching and learning.
  5. Ensuring cohesive policies exist and are implemented for the development of cross curricular themes and dimensions.
  6. Improving and monitoring the effectiveness of the Assessment policy.
  7. Ensuring that all staff are apprised of, and involved in, subject developments and improvements as they apply locally and nationally.
  8. Ensuring that all staff have copies of the appropriate policy documents, the improvement plan and relevant published documentation.
  9. Providing leadership for the strategic and day to day management of resources and finance administration.

General Administration

Establishing a leading public relations role, building contacts and liaising with the appropriate organisations, including Helping Hands, our parent-teacher association.

Liaising with staff and external agencies on matters of attendance and home support and with Social Services with the named contact in cases of alleged child abuse.

Co-ordinating, with the School Business Manager, the arrangements for SATs and other standardised tests, recording and analysis of assessment data, including added-value and CVA.

Liaising with all parties and parents concerning risk assessments, Health and Safety monitoring and safety on a day-to-day basis.

Considering means of informing parents, governors and the community about the Academy, its policy and improvements, including the use of the Newsletter, the Leadership Team reports to AIB/ EMLC and the self-evaluation policy.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The AP is responsible for the following activities in consultation with the Principal and other colleagues.

Curriculum, Standards & Continuing Professional Development

  1. Supporting as professional tutor, the work of newly recruited staff, NQTs and ITT students, ensuring a smooth transition into the life of the Academy.
  2. Overseeing within the Leadership Team, the development and monitoring of the Appraisal policy and individual staff professional development plans.
  3. As Achievement Lead, taking the lead in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of objectives and tasks identified within the Academy Improvement Plan (including changes and improvements to the curriculum) relevant to pupil outcomes, data and curriculum development.
  4. Co-ordinating and managing, with the Principal, CPD activities to achieve a balanced programme which addresses professional requirements.
  5. Co-ordinating, with the Principal, the preparation of staff and the Academy for OFSTED inspection according to the stated objectives within the Academy Improvement Plan and previous inspection(s).
  6. Organising and monitoring duty rosters; providing staff with information regarding supervision duties.
  7. Monitoring curriculum expenditure in consultation with the Business Manager.
  8. Securing acceptable standards of behaviour within the Academy code of conduct and ensuring the maintenance of good order and discipline.
  9. Supervising and organising consultation evenings, reporting to parents and open events.
  10. Liaising with staff to ensure that cross curricular themes and dimensions are explored, correlated and taught; including the implementation of English, Maths, PSHE, SRE and Citizenship policies.
  11. As Achievement Lead, recording, interpreting and analysing comparative data regarding pupil performance and supporting staff with understanding and responding to information regarding pupils’ achievements; co-ordinating the management and administration of all assessments, tests and activities which inform data analysis.
  12. Ensuring that the staff and pupils are set challenging targets across all subject areas with appropriate monitoring and intervention.
  13. Co-ordinating opportunities for the gifted and talented child through scrutiny of the child’s academic progress and potential.
  14. With the Leadership Team, monitoring and evaluation of the quality of teaching and learning, and arranging to observe and support colleagues in this respect.
  15. Keeping abreast of curriculum developments and reviews, locally and nationally, advising of staff training needs and apprising the Leadership Team and colleagues of implications.
  16. Ensuring, with the Principal that the arrangements for reporting to parents are of high quality and that colleagues are supported in providing parents with an accurate description of their child's academic and social progress.
  17. Co-ordinating, with Phase Leaders, the induction policy and programme for pupils as they arrive prior to Year N and Year R and on leaving prior to Year 6.
  18. Liaising with colleagues and external agencies on matters of attendance and behaviour (pastoral support programmes) and home support, and with Social Services named contact in cases of alleged child abuse.
  19. Establishing a leading public relations role, building contacts and liaising with the appropriate organisations.
  20. Co-ordinating lunchtime supervision procedures, the work of dinner supervisors, voluntary staff support and staff training in this respect.
  21. Co-ordinating, with the support of middle leaders, the various curriculum challenge activities such revision sessions and after school opportunities.
  22. Maintaining a significant and visible contribution to Academy improvement as a subject leader, as required.
