COMMENTS FROM THE DIRECTOR

We had a great time at Ed and Rebecca Logan’s place after the Wine Style car show! Lots of sweet delights overflowed the dining room table. We thank them for their gracious hospitality in hosting the meeting and providing the goodies for us.

April is now upon us as March recedes into the archives of our thoughts. Trees are blooming and budding out, flowers are starting to bloom . . . as are the BLUEBONNETS. The swap meet and car show seasons are now upon us in full force! Check the tires, put gas in the tank, get those comfortable shoes out, find the lawn chairs and sunscreen (if needed), and proceed as you desire. LOTS of choices!

April also brings us to the 2008 Edition of the annual Buicks and Bluebonnets Tour, returning to the Stagecoach Inn in historic Salado, TX. This event is always an enjoyable event put on by our Lone Star Chapter associates from the Houston, TX area. A scenic venue to showcase beautiful Buicks, a small Buick-only swap meet, and enjoy the company of our other BCA associates from other areas of the state. After our chapter meeting, Salado, and ending the month with the Pate Swap Meet, it’s going to be an active month!

One item which has changed is the venue for the May meeting. Andy and Molly had planned on hosting this meeting at their home, but something has come up and they have requested it be rescheduled for a later date. The meetings at Andy and Molly’s home have always been fun and enjoyable and we look forward to that happening again. More details on the rescheduling as they occur.

Although there has been some focus on the 2009 BCA National Meet in Colorado, the 2008 BCA National Meet in Flint, MI is just over the horizon. You can find registration and hotel accommodation information in THE BUGLE. On the BCA website, www.buickclug.org, there’s also a thread on the BCA Forum Breakfast. This get-together is planned to allow many of the participants of the BCA Forums (hosted by the AACA) to actually see and talk to, in person, others on the Forums with whom they’ve been interacting with for quite some time. Be sure to keep your BCA National Dues current!

ALSO, don’t forget to pay your North Texas Chapter DUES. Thelma has a detailed list of who has and who HAS NOT paid. Remember, too, that you must maintain Buick Club of America membership to be a member of any BCA-chartered chapter group.

STAY TUNED !

MINUTES OF THE MARCH 8, 2008 MEETING

The March business meeting of the North Texas Chapter of the Buick Club of America was held at Rebecca and Ed Logan’s home in Rowlett, TX on Saturday, March 8, 2008. Prior to this meeting, many of our members took advantage of the car show event, with other clubs, at Wine Styles in Rowlett.

Rebecca and Ed are most gracious hosts. Rebecca had an abundance of delicious refreshments for all to enjoy. Ed gave tours of his vehicle collection out back.

The meeting was called to order by Director Willis Bell at 4:00pm with 28 members and visitors in attendance. Our guests were Jennifer and Alfonso Sobalvarro and Mary Jane and Ken Dickson. By the end of the meeting, all four are now chapter members.

Willis reminded us that the following weekend, March 14-16, the Alamo Chapter would be hosting a BCA Board of Directors Meeting in San Antonio. As our region has two sitting Board members, all chapter members were encouraged to consider attending this event – and several indicated they would (a large number of pictures of this event and other related activities have been posted in the BCA General Forum of the BCA website, www.buickclub.org –Ed.)

Our regularly scheduled chapter gathering for April has been moved from the usual second Saturday to the First Saturday, APRIL 5. Dale Sherman has coordinated this meeting and spoke to the group about a rendezvous at Lost Highway Classic Cars / BelAirs ‘n Burgers, 133 W. Princeton Drive, Princeton, TX. The beginning time of 3:30pm was decided by the group. Princeton is just east of McKinney on US Hwy 380.

Willis asked for a show of hands of those who plan to attend the Lone Star Chapter-hosted Buicks and Bluebonnets Tour Regional Meet at the Statecoach Inn in Salado, TX, the weekend of April 11-13. Quite a few members hope to be there. Good stories were circulated about past meets.

Andy Walla invited everyone to the May meeting to be held at his and Molly’s home in Bedford, TX on May 10th. Main course will be provided, everyone attending please bring salads, side dishes, desserts, etc.

Activities Director Roy Campbell said that June’s chapter meeting is presently not nailed down. More to come later.

Various members mentioned upcoming swap meets in the area – Bowie, Greenville, Chickasha.

THE BUGLE Editor (and local chapter member) Pete Phillips gave us a preview of the April and May issues: April has a centerfold (is this a first?), and will also contain the ballot for voting on the BCA Board Member candidates; and May is planned to include articles regarding the 50th Anniversary of the 1958 Buicks.

Under “Other Business”, on more personal notes, Pete Phillips advised us of a car for sale, a ’62 Special 4-door, South Central Regional Director and first-time-Grandfather David Corbin proudly announced that his daughter (in Colorado) is expecting (due date in October), Ted Phelps related an experience in getting the water pump for his ’58 Super rebuilt, other members related positive and negative experiences on this same subject, and Barbara Cantrell thanked the chapter for sending flowers during her recent illness.

Led by Director Willis Bell, everyone again thanked Rebecca and Ed for hosting such a fine chapter meeting at their home.

Meeting adjourned.

CHAPTER WEBMASTER Ms. Aurora Chancy

HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED IN THE WAY WE “PLAY CARS”

Recently, in “de-archiving” some things in the garage, I had to continually stop to pause and consider how much things have changed over the past forty years of “playing cars”. Think back, if you will, to those times and how we did things in those earlier times and the particular time of your respective lives.

In those times, if you worked on cars, you either did it because that was your vocation, strong interest, needing something to do that kept you around the house, didn’t trust “others”, didn’t like the hassle of scheduling getting things done, or were frugal. A basic set of hand tools came from Sears or a local auto supply. Auto supplies and garages were seemingly everywhere, with many known for specialization in particular vehicle brands or type of repairs. If you did your own oil changes, you used the old oil for various purposes around the house (the only way to “recycle” was to take it to a service station or car dealer, who might question why THEY weren’t doing that work for you) or you let the trusted service station (remember those?) operator/employee or garage owner (who also typically became your “friend in the car service business”) do that type of service work.

Inexpensive floor jacks were just becoming available in the early 1980s, but the more heavy duty versions could give the indication that you were “serious” about what you were doing. Not to mention “jack stands”, a torque wrench, or a creeper! These things, also meant browsing through the Sears/Craftsman tool catalog for sale items almost like most people look at monthly car magazines. One thing leads to another . . .

Yep, things have changed in our modern world! Many things are now more different than we’d ever dreamed!! Environmental issues, for example, (and the many facets of such) now drive much of the legislation regarding vehicles. Although the rules have changed and degrees of execution are now much more intense, we can still enjoy the hobby of “playing cars” in the modern world—the same “world” which young automotive enthusiasts are now awakening to.
