ROLE PROFILE – OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY HEALTHCARE WORKER (ACTVITY) -

ROLE AND CONTEXT
Purpose
-  To provide ward based recreational and diversional activities for an identified patient group.
-  To work as an active member of the Occupational Therapy service.
-  To provide an activity organiser service to identified ward / wards across a seven day working pattern (including evenings and weekends) in a shift rotation with other staff.
Context
-  Stockton Hall Hospital is a 112 bedded Medium Secure Psychiatric Service which specialises in the assessment, care and treatment of patients deemed to be suffering from Mental Illness, Personality Disorder and Learning Disabilities. All patients are detained under the Mental Health Act, 1983. The hospital is a purpose built facility with excellent therapeutic facilities and resources. There are only sixteen female bed on the mental illness ward.

Key Outputs
-  To ensure Health & Safety policies are understood and adhered to.
-  To provide individual or group activities for ward-based patients.
-  To provide feedback of interventions to ward-based nursing staff and the ward Occupational Therapist.
-  To work with patients in safe and supportive environments, providing activities that meet their needs.
-  To work under the supervision of the ward based occupational therapist meeting the department’s standards for individual supervision.
-  To consult with Occupational Therapy staff regarding the needs of individual patients.
-  To be an active member of the occupational therapy team.
-  To have an awareness of working within a secure environment.
-  To become aware of and ensure that patients’ clinical programmes are not compromised.
-  To communicate courteously and tactfully to patients, staff and visitors at all times.
-  To record attendance and submit statistical data to the Senior Technical Instructor or Head Occupational Therapist.
-  To respect confidentiality of both patients and colleagues.
-  To ensure Hospital policies/procedures are complied with at all times.
-  To adhere to Health & Safety regulations and to ensure the upkeep of facilities and equipment.
-  To be accountable at all times for equipment taken on/off the wards and departments, following departmental guidelines.
-  To act in a manner at all times that promotes professionalism and demonstrates a positive role model to patients.
-  To complete necessary risk documentation before taking identified patients out into the community.
-  To provide activities on/off the ward, ensuring safety to self and the patient.
-  To support nursing staff in the daily care of patients on the allocated ward
-  To work with hospital animals and take part in their care
-  To be part of first-line MVA response in the Galtres and in the gym
-  To respond to assistance calls throughout the hospital and provide MVA interventions when not directly involved with working with patients.
-  To help provide gym cover at weekends, as required
-  To undertake room and kitchen cleaning duties as required
-  To adhere to procedures for the security of shop monies.

NEED TO KNOW
Qualifications
-  None essential. Art or craft qualifications useful.
-  Up to date MVA training ( although this can be provided on site)
Skills/Knowledge
-  Ability to empathise with patients.
-  Creativity and the ability to adapt activities to the needs of the patients.
-  Spontaneous and quick thinking in relation to the provision and choice of activities.
-  Good people skills – friendly, talkative, honest.
-  Good listening skills.
-  Ability to follow instructions and to work under direction.

-  Ability to work under pressure and within personal boundaries
-  Team player.
-  To comply with individual knowledge under the Health & Safety Act
-  Aware of the potential risk patients pose when accessing equipment

-  To have the physical fitness required to unload and lift delivery items for the patients’ shop
