An exciting opportunity for University of Melbourne Students and alumni to fill the role of Publicity and Marketing Manager for Mudfest 2017.

About Mudfest

The Student Union at the University of Melbourne has been contributingdirectly to Melbourne’s cultural life for well over fifty years. Mudfesthas become a significant driving-force of creative power and since its inception in 1990 has established itself as a cultural icon on the emerging arts scene in Melbourne.

Mudfesthas grown to encompass all forms of artistic expression. Presented every two years by the University of Melbourne Student Union, Mudfest nurtures, encourages and supports new and innovative arts practices amongst students, while also providing them with professional and creative development opportunities.

This year Mudfest will ask the question “How do we respond to an increasingly frightening world?” Under the theme ‘HATCH’, we hope to present responses that vary from kindness to rage, from small and quiet acts of hope, to loud and furious acts of resistance. The works will be cultivated with the aim to provoke both artistic and conscious growth.

Mudfest provides students with the unique opportunity to be a part of a festival environment that encourages cross-pollination with other disciplines and approaches, as well as fostering an environment of inclusion, and development. In 2017 Mudfest will maintain the initiative of showcasing works that are environmentally sustainable and accessible to people living with disability, encouraging artists to share their work in an inclusive and ethical environment.

Position TitlePublicity and Marketing Manager

CurrencyTime commitment is flexible in the months leading up to July, with a minimum amount of time allocated towards regular meetings with the Artistic Directors and Production team (approximately 2-4 hours per week) in the months leading up to the festival. The successful applicant will be expected to complete tasks when expected, adhering to the holistic festival timeline.

RemunerationThis is a paid position with flexible hours. The successful applicant will be paid a total of $1000 over two instalments – $500 upon commencing the role, and $500 after the conclusion of a festival and the submission of a report.

Role: / Publicity & Marketing Manager
Purpose of role: / The Publicity & Marketing Manager is Mudfest’s key interface with the student community and the general public. They will be solely responsible for the development and implementation of a holistic marketing plan in consultation with the Artistic Directors and the UMSU Communications department.

Accountabilities and tasks: / Marketing
  • Developing a holistic marketing plan in consultation with the Artistic Directors and UMSU Communications to ensure the successful delivery of the festival
  • Liaising between Artists, Production Team and the general public regarding details of the festival
  • Designing and maintaining a strong media presence for the festival in consultation with the Artistic Directors
  • Ensuring the successful delivery of Above Water Launch as a part of Mudfest in consultation with the Artistic Directors and UMSU Media Department
Publicity
  • Providing a clear, environmentally sustainable and accessible means of publicising all programmed works in the festival
  • Ensuring the timely delivery of a festival program to the general public
  • Assisting the Artistic Directors in acting as a spokesperson for the festival
  • Designing and promoting the Above Water Launch Party in consultation with the Artistic Directors and UMSU Media
  • Handling general inquiries regarding the festival, including directing individuals to the appropriate member of the Production Team where necessary
  • Maintain ongoing publications for festival developments
  • Develop the design of the festival hub space in the Uni Bar in consultation with the Artistic Directors
Sustainability and Access
  • Liaise with artists to minimise environmental impact of works
  • Develop Marketing & Publicity plan in consultation with Mudfest’s Access Management team

Key Selection Criteria: /
  • Applicants must be a current or past student at the University of Melbourne, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music or the Victorian College of the Arts. Students with media or design back grounds will be looked upon favourably.
  • Demonstrated interest in design, media publications and marketing
  • Awareness of Mudfest’s thematic content and commitment to promoting artists in their creative development
  • Some level of experience in web design, publicity and or marketing management
  • Administrative and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team

Mudfest is an opportunity for current students to engage, upskill and learn about Arts Production through on the ground experience in a team of peers with diverse skills and experience. Therefore, EVERYONE eligible is encouraged to apply!

Applications should be addressed to the Creative Arts Officers with the subject heading ‘Marketing & Publicity Manager’, and include a brief statement addressing the Key Selection Criteria (maximum one A4 page), a CV and contact details for 2 referees. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview on the 21st-22nd March, at Union House, University of Melbourne, Parkville, 3010.
