Process
Examine the identity theft scams on the ACCC SCAMwatch website to complete the following task.
Combine the issues associated with identity theft and another scam of your choice (see for ideas), ultimately creating a superscam:
- outline the superscam
- identify the impacts of the superscam.
Product
Create a series of flowcharts that could be used in a Consumer Complaints Office.
Create a series of flow charts informing consumers about the following:
- How the scam works
- Procedures to avoid being scammed
- Steps a consumer should take if they do get scammed .
Activity 2
Letterbox drop
Process
Examine how scams workon the ACCC SCAMwatch website to complete the following task:
- using the information of how scams work, think of the most common ways consumers could be scammed in your local area
- find out what is happening in NSW at the NSW Office of Fair Trading .
Product
Create a pamphlet that could be used for a letterbox drop in your local community.
Using Publisher or Word, create a pamphlet warning residents about the following:
- common scams in your area
- a list of frequently asked questions (including answers)
- ways residents can protect themselves against scams.
Activity 3
Scammers anonymous
Process
Examine why scams succeed on the ACCC SCAMwatch website to complete the following task.
Identify the sorts of skills and abilities scammers themselves may need to:
- convince consumers
- perform the scam
- continue the scam.
Product
Create short presentation for a ‘Scammers Anonymous’ meeting.
Using PowerPoint, include either written or graphical information to convince scammers that the skills they have could actually be used for a good purpose. For example you could refer to:
- interpersonal skills
- technical skills
- management skills
- other skills....
Activity 4
Future scenarios
Process
Examine scams and the law on the ACCC SCAMwatch website to complete the following task:
Read and summarise the laws relating to consumer protection and then imagine a society without consumer laws.
Product
Construct a future scenario depicting business and consumer interaction in a world with no laws.
You may choose how to creatively represent your scenario in a format that you can share with your classmates. Ensure that what you create:
- clearly communicates a consumer protection issue
- depicts a process or method of consumer redress without the use of laws or government organisations.
