The School of Education is comprised of four academic departments including Educational Leadership; Teacher Education, Special Education, and Counseling. The mission of the School of Education is to prepare highly qualified, entry-level teachers in early childhood, elementary, secondary, special education, and other professional personnel, such as educational leaders and counselors, to serve New Mexico and/or national PK-grade 12 school districts. Currently there are 24 full-time and numerous adjunct faculties delivering degree and certificate programs at the Main Campus in Las Vegas and at the Centers in Farmington, Rio Rancho, and Santa Fe.

External accreditations of Education programs include the following: New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) through 2018; Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) through 2020, and National Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) [Previously: NCATE] through 2018.

The Department of Teacher Education /Curriculum & Instruction prepares qualified, entry-level early childhood, elementary, elementary/special education (dual major), and secondary educators at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Educational candidates receive the knowledge and skills to teach children birth through Grade 12 from diverse cultural, linguistic and varied developmental backgrounds in private and public educational settings.

Location: This position will be at the Rio Rancho Center but is subject to change. Applications are invited for a nine-month, tenure track position with a contract starting January 18, 2017. The individual selected for this position will have responsibilities in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Courses taught will be primarily in the areas of Curriculum and Instruction, Spanish, Multicultural, and Bilingual Education but may include classes taught outside of those programs depending on expertise. The incumbent is further expected to pursue scholarly activities and serve at the university, local, state, regional, and national levels.

JOB DUTIES: Faculty contractual duties include, but are not limited to:

·  Teaching a full load equivalent to 12 Credit Hours per semester or the equivalent of 24 credit hours per Academic Year;

·  May be assigned to teach evening and/or Saturday classes;

·  Required to develop and maintain collaborative and professional partnerships with local schools and provide service at the university, state, local, and national levels;

·  Will hold office hours as required;

·  Advise students on academic curricula;

·  Direct student research, Independent Study, Field Projects, and Thesis;

·  Serve on faculty and university committees;

·  Conduct scholarly activities such as research in a particular field of knowledge and submit findings for publications and/or presentation at professional conferences;

·  May supervise Field Experiences, PDS classes, Graduate Students;

·  Advise students and maintain notes on Degree Audit;

·  Maintain regular attendance, and

·  Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements: Candidate must have an earned Doctorate from an accredited institution of higher education and knowledge and experience in curriculum and instruction, Spanish related field with emphasis on bilingual education or related field. ABD will be considered if completion is expected within one Academic Year of appointment. Should have three (3) years of teaching experience in Pre-K through grade 12 in public schools.

Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the minimum qualifications, preference will be given to the following:

·  Experience teaching or working with diverse student populations

·  Experience teaching Undergraduate and/or Graduate course work in Education

·  Professional working proficiency in Spanish language of New Mexico in addition to English

·  Ability to use Spanish (as allowed) for instructional purposes at the university level

·  Experience with providing outreach to first generation college students

·  Experience with distance and technology education delivery systems

·  Firm commitment to the use of hands-on activities in instruction at all levels

·  Demonstrated experience in forming partnerships with school districts, membership involvement in one or more professional organization, especially in Bilingual Education

·  Demonstrated experience in leadership roles in Bilingual Education

·  Skills and expertise in the classroom

·  Ability in the use of technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy

·  Ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body

·  Ability to develop effective methodology for the integration of teaching and research

·  Ability to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills

·  Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses

·  Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses

·  Ability to supervise undergraduate and graduate student research
